Rock Candy Records Latest - BAD ENGLISH, ALANNAH MYLES, DOKKEN, JETBOY

The following six new Rock Candy titles are all available now from www.rockcandyrecords.com

ALANNAH MYLES ‘S/T’ CANDY354

WHEN CANADIAN CHANTEUSE Alannah Myles issued her debut album few expected it to attain a level of success that would elevate her to international acclaim and see her become one of the biggest selling female artists of the era. Alannah continues to exude an undeniable air of confidence, but the sheer scale of her accomplishment and the ramifications of the exposure are, in many respects, still being felt by her to this very day.
Born and raised in Toronto, Alannah’s rise to fame was initially littered with frustration and slow progress but bolstered by an unshakeable belief in her abilities. It was this faith in her own talent that fuelled her determination to succeed at all costs, eventually winning an impressive deal with Atlantic Records in the US. Her debut album issued in 1989, and produced by fellow Canadian David Tyson, is a record that mined the lucrative space between all out hard rock and considered pop.
On this record, we are left in no doubt as to Alannah’s vocal credentials. Raspy, sultry and uniquely distinctive her voice permeated a work that had immediate appeal, from cock-sure rockers such as ‘Still Got This Thing For You’, ‘Kick Start My Heart’ and ‘Rock This Joint’ to heart rending ballads like ‘Lover Of Mine’ and ‘Who Loves You’. But of course it’s the huge international hit single ‘Black Velvet’ that created her position in the marketplace, helping to propel the album to sales in excess of 6 million units worldwide.

MICHAEL WHITE ‘S/T’ CANDY350

MICHAEL WHITE’S STORY has always been closely linked to the ghost of Led Zeppelin by virtue of the fact that he fronts one of the world’s preeminent Zeppelin tribute acts, The White. Over the years he has carved out a lucrative career presenting an accurate and entertaining testimonial to an act that redefined the course of rock music.
Interestingly, Michael’s stab at solo success included an unexpectedly successful entrée into the business. Encouraged by Robert Plant himself, he submitted demos to Atlantic Records that were eventually sanctioned by the most important executive at the label, namely label founder, and the man who originally signed Zeppelin, Ahmet Ertegun. Label hopes were high that Michael could cut an impressive solo album and not entirely ape Zeppelin’s sound.
Paired with hot-shot producer Mack (Queen, Billy Squier) he was sent to Munich to record, but problems emerged almost immediately when Mack dismissed Michael’s band (incuding future W.A.S.P. guitarist Randy Piper and former Moxy drummer Danny Bilan) after only a handful of tracks had been taped. Michael suddenly felt that the project slipping away from him when Mack insisted on using session players and utilising electronic programming.
Issued in 1987, the album received positive acclaim for not only its content but also the way it steered clear of immediate Zeppelin comparisons. Indeed, if anything, the record displayed a decided nod to solo era Robert Plant, and it boasted an impressive selection of wide-screen epics such as ‘Matriarch’, ‘One Good Turn’, ‘Fantasy’ and the crowning glory ‘Psychometry’.

JETBOY ‘FEEL THE SHAKE’ CANDY329

WHEN YOU THINK about the LA rock scene from the mid eighties there were a lot of winners (Guns N’Roses, Poison, Motley Crue) and a heck of a lot of losers. However, in a strange alternative universe, many of the also ran’s were more revered than the pantheon of heavy hitters. Take Jet Boy for instance, one of the most revered acts on the scene who, through no fault of their own, were lost to obscurity yet attracted a devoted and passionate fan following.
Formed initially in San Francisco, the band, like so many others, soon gravitated to Los Angeles where they cemented their line up, including former Hanoi Rocks bassist Sam Yaffa, and rubbed shoulders with other hopefuls in a scene that was rapidly exploding. In late 1986 they signed a coveted record deal with Elektra Records and set about recording their debut album with British producer Tom Allom (Judas Priest, Def Leppard and Krokus etc). However once the record was completed disaster struck when Elektra reshaped their roster and cast the band adrift
Fortunately MCA Records snapped up the band issuing ‘Feel The Shake’ in 1988. Informed by the sounds of the Rolling Stones, The CULT, Guns ‘N’ Roses and, most succinctly, Hanoi Rocks, the record won much acclaim but failed to connect commercially. Songs such as ‘Bad Disease’, ‘Fire In My Heart’, ‘Snake Bite’ and the title track, lodge them in the top echelon of low slung guitar mavericks.

STONE FURY ‘BURNS LIKE A STAR’ CANDY355

WE’VE SAID IT before and, no doubt we’ll be saying it in the future, that some records sink into obscurity with no obvious explanation. Quality and class, it would appear, don’t always lead to success in the music business, leaving omissions from the list of winners that have no obvious reasons. The fate of Stone Fury is one such example; an exemplary band, with great songs and superb musical arrangements, left behind at the starting gate, whilst others with lesser abilities made larger commercial impact.
Based in Los Angeles, and formed by the talented duo of German born singer Lenny Wolf (who would later taste success as the leader of Kingdom Come) and American guitarist Bruce Gowdy, Stone Fury concocted an immediately identifiable sound that led to much industry interest. The band’s demo eventually secured them a coveted deal with the giant MCA Corporation. Utilising the services of top British producer Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, Free, Hughes/Thrall), their album was recorded in Los Angeles and issued in 1984, to strong critical reaction but, surprisingly, precious few sales.
Very much a heavy yet melodic outfit, their sound appeared to lean towards the 70s but Wolf’s near falsetto vocal style gave the songs a contemporary edge, bolstered by Gowdy’s impressive guitar work and adventurous, sometimes progressive, musicianship. Not to put too fine a point on it, songs such as ‘Break Down The Walls’, ‘I Hate To Sleep Alone’ and ‘Hold It’ show the band to be superior composers, with the ballad ‘Life Is Too Lonely’ easily demonstrating an ability to take the music to more emotional heights. Certainly an album that requires a lot more recognition.

BAD ENGLISH ‘S/T’ CANDY320

THERE WERE MANY attempts at piecing together supergroups during the late 80s but few were as successful as Bad English, a project born from the mash-up of two hugely influential outfits, namely the Babys (John Waite, Ricky Philips) and Journey (Jonathan Cain, Neal Schon and, later, Deen Costronovo). Both groups had featured talent to die for so anticipation was extremely high for this noble alliance, Fortunately, unlike similar collaborations, the results were spectacular, leaving no one in any doubt that Bad English had delivered a cornerstone record, one that is still revered to this day.
Fronted by the stunning and instantly identifiable voice of John Waite, and ably supported by guitar firebrand Neal Schon, the album contains a brace of superior tracks that elevated the record to platinum status and beyond. Signed to the Epic Records label and produced by Richie Zito (Eddie Money, Cheap Trick, Heart) it boasted no less than five hit singles, including ‘Price Of Love’ and the chart topping #1 power ballad ‘When I See You Smile’. It was a record constructed with pin point accuracy crushing the competition by a country mile.
Issued in June 1989, their commercial accomplishments belies the band’s true depth, a powerhouse rock band laying down the law with grit and determination, as demonstrated on tracks like ‘Possession’, ‘Best Of What I Got’, ‘Forget Me Not’ and ‘Rockin’ Horse’;  all scorching examples of a style and sound that has not diminished one jot over time. No wonder the album sold Platinum and beyond.

DOKKEN ‘BEAST FROM THE EAST’ CANDY345

THE IMPRESSIVE THING about Dokken was that they not only crafted great songs, looking and sounding very much like the archetypical eighties LA rock band, but that they were also an extremely musically gifted unit. Each member was at the cutting edge of their craft, delivering maximum impact in both the studio and on stage. This combined talent produced several big selling albums and paved the way for the recording of this their career-defining double live album.
However, all was not well within the ranks of the band. Leader and vocalist Don Dokken and guitarist extraordinaire George Lynch were involved in a long running feud, one that was played out in public, but one which also added colour to the project, giving the band an edge that provided a palpable frisson to their appeal. In many respects ‘Beast From The East’ benefits from this tension, giving the music a sense of purpose and energy that easily eclipsed the studio recordings.
Taped in Tokyo in early 1988, during an eight date Japanese tour, and released later that year, the record received tremendous reviews and featured seriously impressive versions of Dokken classics such as ‘Dream Warriors’, ‘Unchain The Night’, ‘In My Dreams and ‘Just Got Lucky’. George Lynch’s guitar playing is off the hook, while the rest of the band lay down the law like men possessed. Look out too for a new studio track ‘Walk Away’, giving some indication of where the band might have gone had they remained together.”

One On One With Mitch Lafon - JEFF PILSON (Dokken)

Artist:

FOREIGNER and returning to DOKKEN bassist JEFF PILSON guests on Ep. 257 of One On One With Mitch Lafon.

LINK TO INTERVIEW: http://www.spreaker.com/user/talkingmetal/1on1-mitch-lafon-257-jeff-pilson-dokken

In the show's only interview, Foreigner bassist Jeff Pilson talks about his upcoming return to Dokken, the possibilities for a new album, on 'doing it for the money' and much more.

Quotes from the interview:

For the money criticism (time 1.44): "This is entertainment. This is art. I think people and even artists themselves don't want to think that they do it just for the money. We have a fairly privileged life doing this and to think that we do it just for the money kind of brings up a bad picture in your mind."

(time 2.18): "I think that's how Mick was honestly feeling like the only reason he wanted to do it was for the money, but I've spoken with him since and now he's excited and gets the musical possibilities."

(Time 2.30): "We have a chance to go out and prove ourselves again as a band. I do love music and I do love Dokken even though we were a troubled band in so many ways."

The old wounds (time 5.58): "The truth is - in putting this thing together there were some old wounds that opened up. I think that's bound to happen. We're all pretty passionate dudes. We're all pretty sensitive dudes, but it gave us the opportunity to clear the air a little bit."

Is it really the end? (time 10.54): "Don says it is so I've got to take him at his word. For me, I would keep it as an open door."

One on One with Mitch Lafon - JEFF PILSON

Artist:

FOREIGNER's JEFF PILSON joins Mitch on episode 197 of One On One With Mitch Lafon.

In the episode's only interview, bassist Jeff Pilson discusses Foreigner's latest release In Concert: Unplugged (available only on Amazon for the benefit of Juvenile Diabetes), working on the Last In Line album (featuring Jimmy Bain, Vivian Campbell and Vinny Appice), working on the Mortal Kombat movie, his friendship with Steven Adler and his potential return to Guns N' Roses and the upcoming classic era DOKKEN reunion.

Quotes from the Jeff Pilson interview:

New album: "It may be acoustic, but it still rocks."

Dokken Reunion: "We've all come to a place where we are very appreciative of the legacy Dokken has. When we finally do something, we are going to try and do it right, but we are going to try and do something. Hopefully, I'll have something to report sometime soon."

Steven Adler & Guns N' Roses: "I'm a huge GUNS N' ROSES fan. I happen to think Matt Sorum is an amazing drummer, but chemistry is something you cannot argue with."

"There is something about the chemistry of Steven with those guys that made a sound that I think is the sound that we all know as that classic amazing Guns N' Roses sound. As great as the band could be in later days, I just never think it had that same desperate energy again. So, do I think he should get the call? Of course, I do. I honestly believe that those guys know that. They feel that deep down."

"I think he's ready and I hope to God he gets the phone call because if he does the world is going to get lit on fire again."

Last In Line: "I'm so insanely proud of that rock. It really feels like a little piece of history and I couldn't be more hounored (than) to be a part of it."

Will you tour with Last in Line: "I would step in in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, Foreigner already has dates."

Double Stop Podcast - JON LEVIN

Artist:

Jon Levin (Dokken, Doro, Warlock) discusses his life and career on this week's Double Stop Podcast. From his early days and bands, to his first big break with Doro (Warlock) with the Force Majeure album and tour. We also discuss why he turned his back on music in the 90’s and became a lawyer, and how (over a couple of years) he landed the lead guitarist gig in Dokken. We discuss his 3 Dokken studio albums in depth (Hell To Pay (2004), Lightning Strikes Again (2008) and Broken Bones (2012), plus what the future lies for Dokken and possible recording plans.

On Dokken’s recording plans 60:00 "What we’re talking about is not doing a record, but maybe doing an EP, and then some videos. Three songs, or four songs and then a video for each song. And that makes a lot more sense to me.”

On his first time in the studio with Dokken (recording solos - a few years before he actually joined the band pre Reb Beach) 23:00 “The two songs were The Maddest Hatter but it was a different version of The Madddest Hatter, a slower version. Not the up-tempo version we now have today. And then “The Irish Song” (released as a bonus track for Long Way Home”).

On the recording of Broken Bones 50:20 “Loved it. The most fun of any record we’ve made. Loved it. Don and I purchased identical recording studios. Identical computers, identical pro-tools everything.”

Clone of Rock Candy Records Latest - TANE CAIN & MONTROSE

Artist:

The following four new Rock Candy titles are available now from www.rockcandyrecords.com for a discounted price including postage to anywhere in the world for the next two weeks.

TANE CAIN 'S/T' CANDY287

THE PROLIFERATION OF female singers in rock really took hold in the early 1980s, fuelled by the huge popularity of performers such as Pat Benatar, Ann Wilson, Stevie Nicks and Cher, amongst many others. It was a golden period, with many new names appearing at an exciting rate. But for every successful contender there were an equal number of artists for which fame and fortune sadly stayed just out of reach. One of those was Tan' Cain, a Californian based chanteuse with the voice and looks that should have propelled her to stardom.

Issued in 1982, Tan' Cain's self titled album has gone down in AOR folk lore as one of those records that had it all but, sadly, ended up as a fascinating curiosity rather than a big seller, despite the help and assistance of a major record label and several seasoned musicians. Chief amongst her supporters was her then husband Jonathan Cain the keyboard player and songwriter for Journey. Jonathan brought much to the party, co-writing most of the songs, playing on the album and roping in renowned producer Keith Olson to oversee the recording.

Employing a coterie of top west coast session players, including guitarist Tim Pierce (Giant) and fellow Journey members Neal Schon (guitar) and Mike Baird (drums), the album was constructed with pin-point accuracy, giving rise to a record that has been a long term critical hit far beyond its original commercial failure. Check out such gems as 'Temptation', 'My Time To Fly' and 'Holdin On' for irrefutable proof.

SPECIAL DELUXE COLLECTOR'S EDITION, FULLY REMASTERED SOUND, 12 PAGE FULL COLOUR BOOKLET, 3,500 WORD ESSAY ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE ALBUM, NEW INTERVIEWS AND ENHANCED ARTWORK.

TRACK LISTING: 1. TEMPTATION 2. DANGER ZONE 3. MY TIME TO FLY 4. CRAZY EYES 5. HOLDIN' ON 6. ALMOST ANY NIGHT 7. VERTIGO 8. HURTIN' KIND 9. SUSPICIOUS EYES

MONTROSE - 'PAPER MONEY' CANDY278

THERE'S LITTLE DOUBT that the self titled debut Montrose album was an absolute game changer in the world of hard rock and heavy metal. In fact, these days it is pretty much recognised as ground zero for all that became of the genre, with a sound and swagger that birthed many followers, including Van Halen. Formed by and named after guitarist Ronnie Montrose, the band featured then unknown vocalist Sammy Hagar who would later go on to enjoy a successful solo career and, ironically, front Van Halen.

The second Montrose album, craftily titled 'Paper Money', was recorded and released in late 1974, produced once again by master of the art Ted Templeman. It was a record that found band leader Ronnie Montrose making a decidedly left of centre stylistic turn, introducing a collection of mellower, perhaps more introspective songs into the mix. Sure, it was still very much a hard rock album, but the emphasis was placed on mood and atmosphere rather than muscle and brawn. It was a record that gave insight into the enormous creative talent of Ronnie and his rather unorthodox working methods.

There's much to be enjoyed here, including the Jagger/Richards penned 'Connection', spooky instrumental 'Starliner', intriguing 'Spaceage Sacrifice' and the epic and eerily prophetic title track. Best of all though is 'I Got The Fire', a song that easily picks up where the debut album left off, a track effectively covered by Iron Maiden several years later.

SPECIAL DELUXE COLLECTOR'S EDITION, FULLY REMASTERED SOUND, 12 PAGE FULL COLOUR BOOKLET, 3,500 WORD ESSAY ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE ALBUM, NEW INTERVIEWS AND ENHANCED ARTWORK.

TRACK LISTING: 1. Underground 2. Connection 3. The Dreamer 4. Starliner 5. I Got The Fire 6. Spaceage Sacrifice 7. We're Going Home 8. Paper Money

MONTROSE - 'WARNER BROS. PRESENTS' CANDY279

MONTROSE HAD SUCCESSFULLY crafted a respected reputation for themselves with two albums of Class-A hard rock, before abrasive relationships eroded the band's central core. Vocalist Sammy Hagar was effectively forced to leave the band by an increasingly mercurial Ronnie Montrose, a man who ran the band with complete control and authority. With Hagar cast aside Ronnie appointed new boy Bob James, who like Hagar, was an unknown quantity, but the possessor of an extraordinary voice.

When the band began to plan the recording of their third album, 'Warner Brother's Presents'', Ronnie instigated yet another significant change, by rejecting powerful producer Ted Templeman, in favour of assuming production duties himself. This led to a more eclectic record, that incorporated several moods, ranging from drawn out epics such as 'Whaler' and 'Matriach' to snappier cuts such as 'Oh Lucky Man' [written by Alan Price] and 'Black Train', a proto speed metal romp. But the album's stand out track is 'Dancin' Feet' with its snappy and uninhibited guitar riff holding centre court.

When the album was released in September 1975, it further enhanced the band's reputation as musicians, but it failed to alleviate their declining sales and lack of chart momentum. It also clearly demonstrated Ronnie Montrose's continued quest for musical development and diversity, a fact underscored by the appointment of keyboard player Jim Alcivar, helping to pride a vivid and contemporary sounding palette that indicated the direction to come.

SPECIAL DELUXE COLLECTOR'S EDITION, FULLY REMASTERED SOUND, 12 PAGE FULL COLOUR BOOKLET, 3,500 WORD ESSAY ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE ALBUM, NEW INTERVIEWS AND ENHANCED ARTWORK.

TRACK LISTING: 1. Matriarch 2. All I Need 3. Twenty Flight Rock 4. Whaler 5. Dancin' Feet 6. O Lucky Man 7. One And A Half 8. Clown Woman 9. Black Train

MONTROSE - 'JUMP ON IT' CANDY280

MONTROSE HAD ENJOYED a stellar reputation as one of the best bands of the mid 70s, with their debut album, in particular, garnering extraordinary praise, if not immediate sales success. But the band had also been heavily criticised for failing to deliver a consistent body of work, with Ronnie Montrose insisting on a course of experimentation rather than repetition. The band's previous album, 1975's 'Warner Brother's Presents'' was greeted with faint praise by many connoisseurs of the hard rock genre, with many citing leader Ronnie's need to diversify the band's sound as a self destructive achilles heel.

It was also noted that the band's recordings had become somewhat muted so, under pressure to conform, the label made him abandon production duties and had the reigns over to Jack Douglas, a man who had developed a red-hot reputation producing classic Aerosmith albums. Musically this was just the tonic needed and 'Jump On It' went someway to return the band to former glories, setting out a more defined rock sound, despite the fact that bassist Alan Fitzgerald had been sidelined in favour of a session player.

Issued in Sept 1976, the album contains a number of standout songs, including the hard hitting title track 'Jump On It', 'What Are You Waitin' For', 'Let's Go' and 'Merry -Go-Round' all of them showcasing the superior talent of vocalist Bob James. However, with Ronnie still not able to come to terms with losing control of his own band, and further internal friction, the band, sadly, split up.

SPECIAL DELUXE COLLECTOR'S EDITION, FULLY REMASTERED SOUND, 12 PAGE FULL COLOUR BOOKLET, 3,500 WORD ESSAY ABOUT THE MAKING OF THE ALBUM, NEW INTERVIEWS AND ENHANCED ARTWORK.

TRACK LISTING: 1. Let's Go 2. What Are You Waiting For? 3. Tuft-Sedge 4. Music Man 5. Jump On It 6. Rich Man 7. Crazy For You 8. Merry-Go-Round

2015 Debut of UK Based AOR Event 'ROCKINGHAM Festival'

ROCKINGHAM PRESS RELEASE ~ THERE’S A NEW AOR SHERIFF IN TOWN….

A major new festival is about to land in the UK this autumn. This new endeavour is all set to deliver twenty-two bands in total, including a band that hasn’t played a gig since ’83, six that have never played in the UK, nine that have never played the proposed venue and a further three that haven't been to the UK in over a decade.

Rockingham is all set to take place at Nottingham’s Rock City over the weekend of the 24th to 26th October. Alongside Rock City, Dave Herron has booked and assembled a stellar line up of melodic rock goodness that should guarantee a healthy turnout.
Having been a fan of the genre for many years, Herron is no stranger to the world of Melodic Rock; utilising his vast experience and contacts to put together a bold and exciting line up, but that’s not all as Dave Herron explains, “you can expect a few surprise guest appearances throughout the weekend.”

\With its roots in the past, but its eyes firmly on the future, Rockingham is primed to become a permanent fixture on the UK festival circuit for the foreseeable future.

LINE UP:

FRIDAY 23rd

TOM KEIFER
As part of Cinderella, Keifer should be familiar to any self-respecting rock fan. This is his first visit to the UK as a solo artist and anticipation is high. Expect a mix of Cinderella classics and solo material.

ECLIPSE
Alongside HEAT, Eclipse is riding high as part of the new breed of AOR. If you caught them in the UK recently, then you’ll know what to expect: High-octane hard rock, delivered by a frontman who knows how to handle an audience.

ROBIN BECK
Robin’s been no stranger to these shores in recent years, bringing a series of stunning shows to the UK last year. Robin’s last album was her finest since her debut and she’s currently at the pinnacle of her career.

ROBERT TEPPER
From Rocky to Cobra and beyond. The king of soundtracks will be among many acts making their UK debut at Rockingham. With Tepper, Bush and Peterik in attendance it really will be 80’s soundtrack heaven.

ROMEO’S DAUGHTER
They are the finest female fronted AOR act the UK has ever produced. As a live act they never fail to deliver and are sure to set the bar high.

SERPENTINE
A new singer and a bold new sound, Serpentine are out to prove that this is their definitive line up. Their “Circle Of Knives” album sees them producing the goods in the studio, so expect nothing else from their live performance.

SANTA CRUZ
Loud and proud, these Finnish riff masters will be the perfect festival openers. If Skid Row and the Gunners are your kinda bands, then make sure you’re down the front for these bad boys.

SATURDAY 24th

GOTTHARD
Despite the tragic event that saw the enigmatic Steve Lee lose his life, Gotthard have kept his memory alive by doing what they do best, tearing it up live. There are a few select bands from the last few years that garner such high praise from the AOR cognoscenti, Gotthard are one of them.

DAN REED NETWORK
If ever a band deserved to be lauded from high then Portland’s finest are that act. They’ve toured with Bon Jovi and The Stones and their recent Download performance was magical. In another world they would have been huge, so get ready to mix it up some twenty-two years after they last appeared at Rock City.

JIM PETERIK
Grammy award winner Jim Peterik will be accompanied by a full live band so expect a heavily laiden Survivor set with classic songs also thrown in from JP’s 40+ year writing career , Ides Of March, 38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Cheap Trick, Sammy Hagar and REO Speedwagon to name but a few.

ELECTRIC BOYS
Roll out the Funk ‘o’ metal carpet and get ready to ride it all the way back to the late eighties as Sweden’s finest exponents of the genre take to the stage. They could be the festivals silent assassins, so take nothing for granted and miss them at your peril.

LAST AUTUMN’S DREAM
They maybe a vehicle for Michael Erlandsson these days, but take nothing away from LAD as they’ve an impressive back catalogue to draw from.

VEGA
Always a popular attraction, Vega is the great white hope of the AOR world. With three CDs worth of quality material to choose from, the only problem will be picking the right set.

CARE OF NIGHT
Swedish soft rock newcomers, Care Of Night, delivered a fine debut earlier in the year, the kind that the Westcoast genre was built on. If you’ve had a heavy night after the previous evening’s entertainment, then these boys will be the perfect openers.

SUNDAY 25th

DOKKEN
Back in ‘85/6 Dokken were riding the crest of a wave over in America. Their first four albums are rightly regarded as some of the finest of the era. They’ll be the perfect end to a fabulous weekend.

DAVID GLEN ISLEY, ALAN KRIGGER and CRAIG GOLDY OF GUIFFRIA
A Guiffria less, Guiffria? Well it’s done House Of Lords no harm for the last ten years. With David Glen Isley, Alan Krigger and Craig Goldy in attendance, they’ll be sure to do you right.

VALENTINE
Ex Zinatra keyboard player Robbie Valentine makes his UK debut as a solo artist and his brand of flamboyance is sure to light up the evening.

STAN BUSH
Backed by the rock band, Bailey, Stan Bush makes a welcome return to the UK for his first visit in over a decade. You can expect a jam packed set list, one that will cover all the bases.

ROYAL HUNT
The last time Royal Hunt appeared at a UK festival they damn near stole the weekend. A pompous, bombastic approach will have them appealing to many. With DC Cooper at the helm, a good time is almost guaranteed.

AMMUNITION
Having just stolen the show at the recent Vasby Rock festival, this collaboration between Age Sten Nillsen (Wig Wam) and Erik Martensson (Eclipse) is sure to be a must watch occasion. Their new album is one of this year’s highlights, after this performance you’ll understand why.

ISSA
AORs most popular pin up girl has just released what is arguably her best album. Her recent live performances have seen her in good form; this performance should be no exception.

NO HOT ASHES
An exclusive for the Melodicrock.com readers and that’s the addition of Irelands finest to the bill. Fresh from supporting FM on their recent UK tour, No Hot Ashes will deliver a pleasant set of jaunty AOR.

I think you’ll all agree that Rockingham Festivals AOR credentials have been fully endorsed by having such an array of talent on show. Fans and ticket buyers would also be wise to watch out for announcements of official pre and after shows in the coming months via the festivals Facebook page.
Dave Herron sums up the impending weekend perfectly, “It’s gonna be one hell of a party, with plans for 2016 already taking shape.”

Rock Candy Records Latest - DOKKEN & TRAPEZE

Artist:

The following three new Rock Candy titles are available now from www.rockcandyrecords.com for a discounted price including postage to anywhere in the world for the next two weeks ending on May 3rd.

DOKKEN 'BACK FOR THE ATTACK' CANDY266

THE FACT THAT Dokken were never the most tightly bonded quartet has been well documented. Internal rancour and persistent inter-band feuding seemed the order of the day (particularly between vocalist Don Dokken and guitarist George Lynch) yet the by-product of such friction seemed to stir the band to amazingly creative highs as this, their fourth studio, album firmly demonstrates. Issued to huge acclaim, to a fan base already primed by the platinum success of their previous album ‘Under Lock And Key’, this album is generally regarded as their most accomplished work.

Re-recording took place over a ten month stretch, with a total of five state-of-the-art Los Angeles studio being utilised. Originally issued in late 1987, and produced by Neil Kernon (Autograph, Queensryche, Kansas), ‘Back For The Attack is a consummate example of late 80s melodic hard rock, stuffed to the rim with all the right moves and grooves. Don Dokken’s instantly identifiable vocals and George Lynch’s guitar solos, soak the songs with enough vim and vigour to elevate them to classic status.

Tracks such as ‘Burning Like A Flame’, ‘Heaven Sent’, ‘Prisoner’ and ‘Dream Warriors’, the theme song to the hit horror movie ‘Nightmare On Elm Street 3’, are some of the best tracks the band ever recorded. It’s sad to note that the band’s final demise started almost immediately upon completion of this album, leaving the hard rock community without one of the best acts of the 80s.

Special Deluxe Collector’s Edition, one bonus track, fully remastered sound, 16 page full colour booklet, features new interview with Don Dokken, 3,500 word essay and enhanced artwork.

TRACK LISTING: 1. KISS OF DEATH 2. PRISONER 3. NIGHT BY NIGHT 4. STANDING IN THE SHADOWS 5. HEAVEN SENT 6. MR. SCARY 7. SO MANY TEARS 8. BURNING LIKE A FLAME 9. LOST BEHIND A WALL 10. STOP FIGHTING LOVE 11. CRY OF THE GYPSY 12. SLEEPLESS NIGHTS 13. DREAM WARRIORS BONUS TRACK: 14. BACK FOR THE ATTACK

TRAPEZE 'HOT WIRE' CANDY264

TRAPEZE WERE INITIALLY one of the most promising and, later on, revered bands to have emerged from the UK during the 1970s. They blasted their way from obscurity to international acclaim, then, just as stardom beckoned, the carpet was pulled from under their feet when in 1973 vocalist and front man Glenn Hughes opted to leave the band, hitching his wagon to hard rock grandees Deep Purple. The general consensus was that Trapeze would not be able to carry on after such a catastrophic blow yet, against all the odds, they dusted themselves down, retrenched and got back in the ring to fight another day.

Choosing to expand the band’s line-up, founding members guitarist Mel Galley and drummer Dave Holland opted to recruit fellow Midlanders, bassist Pete Wright and second guitarist Rob Kendrick. Together they took the Trapeze blueprint of funky hard rock and injected it with a far more hook-laden sheen. Showing real growth the band’s sound evolved incrementally, with Mel Galley taking on lead vocals, there were now songs that wouldn’t be out of place in the esteemed company of mid seventies US arena acts such as Derringer, Montrose and Foghat.

Originally issued in 1974 and produced by veteran blues champion Neil Slaven (Savoy Brown, Chicken Shack, Stray) at Island Records Basing Street studios in London, the album contains a stellar selection of hard-hitting tracks, including ‘Back Street Love’, ‘Wake Up, Shake Up’ and the album centrepiece ‘Midnight Flyer’, an impressive and hard hitting funk fuelled track built to blow your mind.

Special Deluxe Collector’s Edition, fully remastered sound, 12 page full colour booklet, features new interviews, 3,500 word essay and previously unseen photos.

TRACK LISTING: 1. BACK STREET LOVE 2. TAKE IT ON DOWN THE ROAD 3. MIDNIGHT FLYER 4. WAKE UP, SHAKE UP 5. TURN IT ON 6. STEAL A MILE 7. GOIN’ HOME 8. FEEL IT INSIDE

TRAPEZE 'S/T' CANDY265

PER CAPITA THE British Midlands produced an extraordinary amount of heavy rock bands during the late 60s and early 70s. Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Slade and half of Led Zeppelin spring immediately to mind, but of serious note are Trapeze, the group that first introduced us to the extraordinary talent of vocalist and bassist Glenn Hughes. Developing a fervent fan following, especially in the USA, this killer power trio specialised in a brilliant mash-up of hard rock and funk. All was going swimmingly until Hughes was purloined in 1973 by rock behemoths Deep Purple.

Refusing to succumb to defeat, Trapeze regrouped, this time adding two new members to fill the void left by Hughes whilst founding member Mel Galley assumed lead vocal duties. ‘Hot Wire’, the resultant album, was an impressive statement, sending out an unequivocal message that the band was far from spent. Indeed, their stature in the US and especially Texas, was further enhanced with intensive gigging and chart success. For their fifth album (confusingly self titled) the band continued their musical assault, unleashing a record that was more consistent with arena rock of the mid seventies.

Released in 1976, produced by Steve Smith (Back Street Crawler, Rough Diamond and Detective) and recorded in London at Island Studios (mixed by an uncredited Eddie Kramer), the record showcases defiant swagger, and riffs to die for. It even contains two songs featuring Glenn Hughes who had remained a staunch supporter of the band.

Special Deluxe Collector’s Edition, fully remastered sound, 12 page full colour booklet, features new interviews, 3,500 word essay and previously unseen photos.

TRACK LISTING: 1. STAR BREAKER 2. IT’S ALRIGHT 3. CHANCES 4. THE RAID 5. ON THE SUNNY SIDE OF THE STREET 6. GIMMIE GOOD LOVE 7. MONKEY 8. I NEED YOU 9. SOUL STEALER 10. NOTHING FOR NOTHING

DON DOKKEN and GEORGE LYNCH Dispute 'Breaking The Chains'

Artist:

On recent episode of THE CLASSIC METAL SHOW, guitarist George Lynch and vocalist Don Dokken have traded barbs regarding their debut release in Dokken, BREAKING THE CHAINS. On the December 6th edition of THE CLASSIC METAL SHOW, Lynch was asked about which album he wishes he could take out of his catalog, to which he answered BREAKING THE CHAINS. Below is what Lynch had to say:

GEORGE LYNCH: I was going to say BREAKING THE CHAINS, quite honestly.

CLASSIC METAL SHOW: Really? You don't like BREAKING THE CHAINS?

GEORGE LYNCH: I did like it when we originally recorded it, but then (Don) Dokken got ahold of it and destroyed it. He basically sent us home from Europe and said, "OK guys, we're done. I'm just going to stay back and hang out with my girlfriend." I was thinking, "OK." What he did was he stayed in the studio when we were gone and had his way with the record, which was (to) pump up all the vocals, take all my guitars out. Destroy the mix. It just sounded weak and wimpy. It just killed it. It was actually pretty muscular and pretty tough when we were in the studio. It was down in the basement at Dierk's studio in Germany. The Scorpions were upstairs. Rory Gallagher was upstairs. These guys wanted to hear what was going on, so they would bring down the guitar player from Scorpions and Rory. They would sit there. I was so proud of my guitar tracks. Me and Michael Wagoner were holed up there. We'd board the place up. We wouldn't let anybody in. I had a 24 track tube machine and an MC500 board. I had one of Richie Blackmore's old cabinets and a Rangemaster treble booster and my Tiger guitar. It sounded so good. It was the first record I'd ever done, really, so we were committed to making a statement. Quite honestly, the sound was just unbelievable. Then when it was all done, he did what he did to it and he killed it. It's very hard for me to listen to because of that, because I knew what it was and nobody will ever hear that unfortunately.

Vocalist Don Dokken appeared on January 3rd edition of THE CLASSIC METAL SHOW, and was asked about Lynch's claims that Don stayed behind and remixed the record behind his back. Don's response is below:

CLASSIC METAL SHOW: We talked to George (Lynch) a month ago, and he said that with BREAKING THE CHAINS, you stayed behind in Germany and remixed the record behind his back.

DON DOKKEN: That's a typical George Lynch statement. No, it wasn't Bob (Ludwig, engineer). I love that he says, "behind his back". I guess George forgot that when we did BREAKING THE CHAINS, he wasn't in the band. For the record...George...what is he smoking? He must be smoking something.  When I did BREAKING THE CHAINS, it was a solo record deal. George was not in the band. Mick was not in the band. Juan Crocier's picture is on the album, but he didn't play on it. Peter Baltes did because Juan missed the deadline to get to Germany. I had Peter play the bass tracks. It was a solo album, and the album came out originally in Germany, and it was called "Don Dokken BREAKING THE CHAINS". I have a copy. It's a picture of me on the cover and it says "Don Dokken". Now, George...I asked him to be in the band. He said no. I asked Mick if he wanted to be in the band. He said no. They were going to do something else. They were going to do Exciter. So for him to say "behind our back", he was paid $2500 to play on the record and that's it. He had nothing to do with Dokken. He wasn't in the band. He'd just come to Germany. We did a little tour. I paid him. He went back. He thought he was going to join Ozzy. That didn't work out. So he basically had nowhere to go, no band, and he was broke. That;'s when he came back and said, "I want to be in the band", because Mick had decided to come and play with me. To say that I did anything "behind his back", I don't know what that means because he wasn't in the band. He had nothing to do with Dokken. The guy is high.

SWEDEN ROCK FEST Adds DOKKEN And More...

Another ten acts confirmed for the Sweden Rock Festival!

Previously, 38 acts have been announced for next year's Sweden Rock Festival. Here is another ten:

Legendary guitarist Slash, whose latest album "World on fire" went to #1 in the Swedish charts a few weeks ago, will perform at Sweden Rock for the first time next summer. And naturally, he is bringing vocalist extraordinaire Myles Kennedy (also in Alter Bridge) and his cohorts in The Conspirators. Expect the best Slash songs along with classics by both Guns n' Roses and Velvet Revolver in the setlist!

Dokken was one of the big bands of the 80s, with an influential blend of classic hard rock and melodies á la what some refer to as hair metal. The band has not played Sweden Rock since 2001, so it's about time they return. Notably, singer Don Dokken, drummer Mick Brown and demon guitarist Jon Levin are joined by the celebrated singer Mark Boals, known for his singing with Yngwie Malmsteen and Royal Hunt among others... as the bands bassist!

Hardcore Superstar from Gothenburg have been one of Sweden's most popular hard rock bands for years. Their latest Sweden Rock appearance was marred by heavy rain and although most of their audience persisted, they are well worth a new shot.

In 1998, a new band featuring members from Katatonia, Opeth and Edge Of Sanity was formed in Stockholm. They took the name Bloodbath and quickly became connoiseurs' faves, and all but mythical since they hardly ever performed live. Earlier this year, their fourth album "Grand Morbid Funeral", featuring new vocalist Nick Holmes (Paradise Lost) was released and their Sweden Rock appearance will be their only in Sweden this summer.

Pat Travers is a Canadian hard rock legend. He made his debut in 1976 and instantly established his style: fundamentally blues based hard rock spiced with unorthodox rhythms and unabashed pop melodies. On his later works, blues is the predominant influence, with the characteristic Travers guitar sound fully noticeable.

Swiss outfit Eluveitie is one of the most successful folk metal bands today. Their sound mixes melodic death metal (Gothenburg style) with Celtic folk music, featuring traditional instruments like bagpipe, violin and miscellaneous flutes and pipes. In 2015 they make their SRF debut, and their only Swedish performance next summer.

Refuge is in fact the reunited 1988-1994 line-up of German heavy/power metal icons Rage: Peavy Wagner (vocals/bas), Manni Schmidt (guitar, ex-Grave Digger) and Chris Eftimiadis (drums). The trio reunites to perform songs exclusively from what some consider the best period in the history of Rage, and albums like "Perfect man", "Secrets in a weird world", "Trapped" and "Missing link". The name Refuge is used since the current version of Rage, front man Peavy's day job, remains active.

Thin Lizzy leader Phil Lynott (RIP) called keyboardist Darren Wharton the band's most talented member ever. Since 1985, the same Darren Wharton fronts Dare - originally a melodic hard rock band which has gradually turned towards a more ethereal and Celtic sound. Next spring will see the release of the eighth Dare studio album, shortly before them returning to Sweden Rock.

Dan Hylander earned his place in Swedish rock history as the leader of Raj Montana band. When the group was disbanded in 1984, Dan Hylander continued as a solo artist and producer for artists like Totta Näslund and Tomas Ledin. In 2011 he made a comeback album and next year he makes his Sweden Rock debut - a suitably rocking setlist has been promised.

DOKKEN Replaces Sean McNabb With Mark Boals

Artist:

On the November 8th edition of THE CLASSIC METAL SHOW, Dokken vocalist Don Dokken announced that vocalist/bassist Mark Boals (Yngwie J. Malmsteen / Ted Nugent) has been named as the new bassist of Dokken. During the conversation, Dokken explained how Boals came into the band, as well as the factors that led to his decision to replace former bassist Sean McNabb (Great White / Quiet Riot / Sons Of Anarchy). The statement can be heard here - http://youtu.be/l0FNm873eYg

Here is a transcript of the conversation:

Don Dokken - Sean (McNabb) is doing acting and solo projects and other bands.  Sean's a very motivated guy and has got a lot of stuff going on, but I need a bass player that wants to be in Dokken...not to be in Dokken to promote himself, if you understand.  There was a time when I asked him to turn down because he was crushing everybody on stage with the bass volume. I went over and asked him to turn down. He didn't. So I went over and turned the amp down. He walked back to the amp and turned it back up. Now, you don't do that in Dokken. You don't do that in any band. If you do that in Whitesnake or Priest or anybody...if you do that as a hired gun and you go up and the lead singer tells you to turn it down, and he turns you down and you go back and turn it back up, you'd be on a bus taking a slow Greyhound home. So that was kind of the last straw for that. I understand. Like Sean said, he was promoting himself. I said, "well, this is called Dokken, not McNabb". Sean's a great guy. I love him to pieces. He's a good guy. We had five or six that we played together. It was great.

Don Dokken - But I really felt that in Dokken, we were missing what we're famous for. That's the harmonies. It's hard to replace Jeff Pilson. Jeff Pilson - he plays with a pick, which I like. I don't like people that play with their fingers. It's not the same. I like Peter Baltes type bass players who play with a pick, and Sean doesn't. So it didn't have a lot of "attack". I needed a really killer singer that was as accomplished as Jeff Pilson. He was sorely missed, you know.

Don Dokken - So I meet Mark Boals, who's played with Ted Nugent. He did four albums with Yngwie Malmsteen and he's a great lead singer. I didn't really ask him if he wanted to play in Dokken because I figured that he's a lead singer and that's what he does. So we had a gig a couple of months ago, and he was doing those acoustic gigs with me, and he said, "I play bass". So I said, "let's play a show together and see how it goes". So I rehearse with Mark on vocals and Mike and Me, and it sounded amazing. As you see on the internet, people go, "I saw Dokken and the harmonies were awesome." So I said, "do you want to be the bass player?" He said, "Yep", and I said, "OK, you're in."

Don Dokken - So that's it. It wasn't like Sean was fired or anything. It's just that Sean's got his solo stuff going on. I think he was doing some stuff with Sons Of Anarchy, and he's got other projects going on and other groups he plays in. I just thought...I need a bass player to say what I need to hear, and that was, "I just want to be in Dokken". That's what Mark said. "I'm not trying to promote myself. I'm happy not to be the lead singer. I'm happy to back you up, and if you can't hit all those high notes you used to when you were young, I can take care of that." So, it's awesome, and he's a super nice guy.

The early '80s metal scene in Los Angeles has become legendary, as it spawned such worldwide headliners as M'tley Cr'e, Ratt, Dokken, W.A.S.P., and originally, Metallica (before the latter relocated to San Francisco). Directed by Bob Nalbandian and produced by Metalrock Films, 'Inside Metal' features all-new interviews with countless bands and artists that thrived on the scene, and tell its story, first hand. SWEET/LYNCH - A 4-Track Preview Of Debut Album

Artist:

Vocalist Michael Sweet (Stryper) and guitarist George Lynch (Dokken, Lynch Mob) have teamed up for SWEET/LYNCH, an album designed by Frontiers Records CEO Serafino, which is due for release early in 2015.
I’ve been fortunate enough to preview 4 tracks from the upcoming album and can’t speak highly enough of the tracks!

Both Lynch and Sweet impress the hell out of me on these tracks and the backing band of James Lomenzo (Megadeth, White Lion, Black Label Society) and drummer Brian Tichy (S.U.N., Whitesnake) means that if these four tracks are anything to go by, all the songs written for this album are going to be hammered home by this ultra-powerful rhythm section.

Sweet just sounds extraordinarily good on these songs. And Lynch is shredding and riffing like a man possessed. This is something big to look forward to.

Briefly – the four tracks I have heard are:

The Wish – A brilliant, rousing hard rocker with a thumping beat and an instant guitar riff, and a melodic vocal driven chorus that isn’t huge, but is immediately stored in the memory bank for endless repeating in your head later. And Lynch gets to display the best of his guitar work during a decent length solo.

Like A Dying Rose – An even better chorus on this one. The beat isn’t as intense or as fast as The Wish, but the chorus is huge and delivers a sound mix of everything that made Dokken and Stryper Platinum sellers. A big big vocal!

Love Stays – A slow, groove orientated ballad with a direct, impactful chorus and some classy guitar playing throughout.

Time Will Tell – Less intense than the other tracks, but more uptempo, adding good variety to the 4 tracks previewed. Another strong, harmony filled chorus and some choppy riffing.

A 90-second preview of another track Divine can be heard here: http://www.chirb.it/eKcwes

And you can hear just how awesome the track Time Will Tell sounds right here: http://audio.chirbit.com/michaelhsweet_1406294226.mp3

Stay tuned for more preview samples and updates on SWEET/LYNCH.
