Decibel Geek Podcast - DESMOND CHILD

Legendary songwriter/producer Desmond Child guests on this week's episode of the Decibel Geek podcast.  In this hour-plus talk, Desmond looks back on his early days as a performer in the NY-based disco group Desmond Child and Rouge. This band was a favorite of KISS singer/guitarist Paul Stanley, who used to frequent the band's live shows. A friendship was struck as well as gold when the two collaborated on 'I Was Made for Lovin' You', a Top 10 smash that spanned the globe. Desmond's career in writing/producing took off from there. While the songwriting partnership with Stanley was harmonious, his dealings with the other boss of KISS, Gene Simmons, have been more complex. 'There was one point where they decided they weren't going to have any co-writers on their records. So, they made a big deal out of it because suddenly I was co-writing with KISS and Bon Jovi and Alice Cooper and Joan Jett and having #1 songs and they said 'Well, we have to go against the grain.' Gene started saying, 'Well, we're recording at our studio but we have guards outside the door to keep Desmond Child out.' I was so pissed off. It's like 'Hey guys, I helped to make you richer than you already were, you know? Why would you do that? You're hurting my feelings. If you're gonna attack somebody, attack the other bands (laughs), not the guy that's helped you. I was so hurt. I actually didn't write with them for a very long time after that. But, I came back to write on Paul's solo record. We wrote a great song called 'Live to Win'.'

While that early 90's quote from Simmons stung, Child has gone on to forge a friendship with the long-tongued rock legend. 'Now he's kind of a mentor to me. I'll ask him questions and he emails me right back. Because he has so much experience in every genre; film, television, records. He like an encyclopedia of wealth, of information; especially business-wise. He's a genius.'

While working with Rouge, Child used his songwriting prowess to help work through a big transition in his personal life during the making of the band's sophomore album Runners in the Night. 'It was all about my relationship with Maria because we had started the group together and we were together and then I fell in love with a guy and then realized I was really more gay than I was straight. The first song on that album's called 'The Truth Comes Out' and it's all about my coming out. We thought 'Well let's just put our lives into the music.'

While Desmond Child's songwriting credit list is impressive, boasting over 300 million in sales, his take on the current state of streaming music is sobering. 'Jon (Bon Jovi), Richie (Sambora), and I get 6 million streams on Pandora every quarter on average for 'Livin on a Prayer'; just the one song. Imagine all the other streams we're getting. Yeah, but we got a big check for $110.00 to split amongst the three of us and our publishers. The record companies get 96% of the money and we get 4% because they got in there and made deals and they bought into these companies and frankly, we got dicked. We've gotta turn that around. That's what the Songwriters Equity Act is that's coming through Congress this year. It's to re-establish the 50/50 licensing model for all music usages.'

Also sobering is Desmond's take on the future of terrestrial radio. 'Terrestrial radio will die. It's on its way out, it's over. The whole country of Norway just stopped stopped terrestrial radio; it went digital. So, Sweden's next, then the rest of Europe, then pretty soon the UK. It's gonna be here (USA) too and in Canada. In 10 years there will be no terrestrial radio. There will be no AM. There will be no FM and if it's tilted in that direction where we get 4% and they get 96%, it really hurts the music because people aren't going to choose this as a career. Think about this, when I came to Nashville in 1991, there were over 5,000 signed writers to publishing companies within the 440-Circle (interstate that surrounds Nashville). At last count, there were 237. In 20 years, that's how much music has diminished.'

While his resume is filled with superstars that have provided the soundtrack of millions of lives, Child looks back especially fondly at a songwriting session at a small house in New Jersey with two young rockers that would yield a massive anthem still spun by millions today. 'I rented a car and drove to NJ and went to this little house that was on the edge of a marsh. On the other side of the marsh, like Emerald City, was this oil refinery. It was like the most toxic place on Earth and that's where Richie (Sambora) lived. I had a title in my back pocket; You Give Love a Bad Name. Jon (Bon Jovi) loved that. He had a song on (7800) Farenheit, because he's very resourceful, called 'Shot Through the Heart.' So we started the song with 'Shot through the heart and you're to blame. You give love a bad name.' And history was made.'

AEROSMITH Rocks Donington On All Formats September 4

New York, NY (June 15, 2015)--As AEROSMITH gears up for their 2015 summer tour, a date has been announced for the release of Aerosmith Rocks Donington 2014.  Due out September 4, the 20-song collection captures the legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famers delivering a scorching career-spanning show at the famed Donington Park in Leicestershire, UK in June 2014.  Filmed in high definition, the critically acclaimed concert film--which premiered in February with a highly successful nationwide theatrical run--will be available on multiple formats: Blu-ray+2CD, DVD+2CD, DVD+3LP and digital formats for North America and DVD, Blu-ray, DVD+2CD, DVD+3LP and digital formats for ROW/Europe.  Details about a special pre-sale--with bonus items--of Aerosmith Rocks Donington 2014 will be available in the coming weeks.
Headlining the massive Download Festival as part of the band’s “Let Rock Rule” tour, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Joey Kramer, Tom Hamilton, and Brad Whitford unleashed supercharged versions of “Love In An Elevator,” “Janie’s Got A Gun,” “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing,” “Dude Looks Like A Lady,” “Walk This Way,” “Dream On,” “Sweet Emotion,” “Toys In The Attic,” “Mama Kin,” and many more.
In the Aerosmith Rocks Donington 2014 liner notes, David Wild--Contributing Editor, Rolling Stone--describes the performance as having “the same kind of power and overwhelming passion that has always remained at the very heart of the live Aerosmith experience…So whether you were fortunate enough to be there among the crowds at Donington Park that gloriously atmospheric night in 2014--or more likely, if you are just lucky enough to catch up after the fact today--there is only one appropriate shared reaction to what you are seeing and hearing here: genuine rock & roll shock and awe.”
"It's always an absolute hoot that leaves me howling at the moon, performing at Donington we couldn't have had a better time on stage that night,” says Steven Tyler.  “I could feel the vibes of all the greats pulsing through the stage like AC/DC, Rage Against the Machine, Metallica and so many more.”
“We have played Donington many times but this performance was one of our best,” recalls Joe Perry. “Thanks to our fans who were there who helped us make it a night to remember.  We are proud to have it be part of this theatrical series and it will give our fans who weren’t there around the world a chance to relive an ass kicking night of rock and roll.”
"We’re really proud and grateful to have been chosen to headline the Download festival at Donington for 2014,” Tom Hamilton adds. “It was an awesome experience and I think this film captures it.  Special thanks to the insane fans who stuck with us through mud and rain.”
“I'm grateful to have been able to play this show at Donington,” says Joey Kramer. “I thought the band played great, the audience was great. That night was a very special time.”
“Playing in Donington has always been a highlight of the tour for us,” adds Brad Whitford. “The fervor of the crowd there is a sight to behold and this night was no different.”
Fans can now bring home the live experience of Aerosmith Rocks Donington 2014Breaking down the long-lasting appeal of the band and the contributions of each of its members, Wild writes in the liner notes:
●“Has any frontman ever stayed as deeply connected to the true spirit of rock & roll than Steven Tyler? The man’s muse does just not seem to contain an off-switch, and somehow he continues to have more energy onstage now than ever before…take a good look at Tyler on fire here…Tyler’s voice remains a tremendous force of nature…”
●“[Perry’s] delivered some of the most thrilling and iconic guitar solos in all of rock history…the man is not simply one of our all-time greatest guitarists…Perry has also more than earned his place in the Songwriters Hall of Fame along with Steven Tyler, further validation of their shared place as one of rock’s most respected songwriting teams ever.”
●“Among many other virtues, Aerosmith is arguably the most soulful band in rock history, and a lot of the credit for that goes to powerhouse yet funky drummer Joey Kramer…Kramer’s strong sense of feel provided Aerosmith with a solid foundation that keeps the band pumping…Kramer is the man credited with giving the band its eternally cool name.”
●“Rock solid bassist Tom Hamilton is much more than simply half of one of hard rock’s best and most versatile rhythm sections…Hamilton is not just a fine musician--he has also co-written a few of the most beloved Aerosmith classics…namely ‘Sweet Emotion’ and ‘Janie’s Got A Gun,’ as well as a number of other fan favorites.”
●“…[Brad Whitford is]…perhaps the group’s most effective secret musical weapon…known as Aerosmith’s band’s rhythm guitarist…Whitford has shown himself to be the absolute perfect guitar slinger to partner with Joe Perry--a more trained axe ace who has done so much to allow Aerosmith to consistently sound like a massive guitar army, and even better yet, one that always wins.”

AEROSMITH, Rock's greatest live act, will perform at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in the Pro Football Hall of Fame's first-ever Concert for Legends on Friday, August 7 at 8 p.m. ET. The concert will pay tribute to the legends of the Game on the eve of the Enshrinement for the Class of 2015.
"The Hall is thrilled to have legends of the music world honor the legends of the Game," shared Hall of Fame President David Baker. "AEROSMITH performing in the inaugural Concert for Legends will add even more excitement and energy to an Enshrinement Weekend that kicks off the NFL's 96th season since its birth in Canton, and the launch to Super Bowl 50."
AEROSMITH – Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, Joey Kramer, Tom Hamilton, and Brad Whitford – are a living piece of American music history, having sold over 150 million albums worldwide and been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They are the recipients of countless awards including four GRAMMYs, eight American Music Awards, six Billboard Awards and 12 MTV Video Music Awards, among many other honors. Their latest honors include the 2013 ASCAP Founders Award and induction, also in 2013, into the Songwriter Hall of Fame at the 44th Annual > SHOF ceremony. MUSIC FROM ANOTHER DIMENSION! (Columbia), the band's latest album, was released in late 2012. Proving that they can cross genre-boundaries with ease, these rock legends have even taken home a Soul Train Award for Best Rap Single for their remix of Run DMC's "Walk This Way." With scores of multi-platinum albums, AEROSMITH continues to inspire generations to get their wings, get a grip and just push play. It is no wonder why they are one of the most beloved bands of all time.
AEROSMITH was formed in Boston and the band members are avid New England Patriots fans.
Says Joe Perry: "Having grown up since the age of 2, born in Lawrence, Ma., 45 minutes from Foxborough Stadium and seen the franchise grow has been an amazing experience. As Aerosmith began traveling the world and became our own Hall of Famers, seeing the Patriots under the brilliant guidance of the Kraft family, we would hear the news of our hometown team winning again as we were doing a show in a far flung corner of the world and we would swell with pride and think, 'Ya those are our boys.' The fact that American Football is worldwide news, shows the intensity of the game and the impact of how you play it. On behalf of Aerosmith we would like to congratulate all of you Hall of Famers, owners, the commissioner of NFL, and of course our hometown team the Patriots. To perform this show for the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Hall of Famers is truly a great honor. You only get here by playing the game with all of your heart and soul. So we look forward to honoring all of you with a show that comes from the same place."
Tom Hamilton adds: "When we started out, jocks did not hang out with long haired musicians longer than it took to beat them up.  Finally we have a meeting of the minds based on mutual respect. It'll be a great honor to be there that night."
AEROSMITH has many Gold Jackets (living Hall of Famers) who are big fans of the band. Class of 2008 Gold Jacket and former Patriots linebacker Andre Tippett will be on hand for the Concert for Legends alongside an expected 100 or more Hall of Famers and countless other NFL legends.
"Spending my whole career in New England, I was very fortunate to have opportunity to get to know Steven, Joe, Brad, Tom and Joey," noted Tippett. "I can tell you that the New England Patriots locker room, in my day, was playing Aerosmith songs like 'Toys in the Attic,' 'Sweet Emotion,' 'Livin on the Edge' and 'Walk This Way.' And today, I can honestly tell you that those same songs fill the locker room of the Super Bowl champions."

JOE PERRY Says Merry Christmas With Solo EP

Coming off the release of his New York Times best-selling memoir, ROCKS: My Life In and Out of Aerosmith (released October 7 via Simon & Schuster), JOE PERRY has just released a four song EP: JOE PERRY’S MERRY CHRISTMAS (Unison Music Group).  PERRY’s first-ever collection of holiday songs features four Christmas classics: “White Christmas,” “Silent Night,” “Santa Claus Is Back In Town” and “Run Run Rudolph” with Johnny Depp on rhythm guitar. The EP is available now at Unison’s website or on iTunes.

“I have wanted to do a Christmas CD with Aerosmith for years, but it seems we never have the time to record one,” JOE says.  “When my ROCKS book tour ended, the timing was right--we were in LA with access to a studio with some really talented friends and it all fell together.  I was finally able to record some Christmas classics for the fans.”

With so many holiday songs out there, how did you choose these selections? And, why did you choose to record some as instrumentals and others as vocal tracks?
JP:  “The two instrumentals are among the 10 most popular Christmas songs. Almost everyone knows the lyrics to ‘Silent Night’ and ‘White Christmas,’ so we treated them as songs that people could sing along to, while staying close to the classic versions everyone knows. The two vocal songs, ‘Santa’s Back in Town’ and ‘Run Run Rudolph’ are rockers made famous by Elvis and Chuck Berry. They are probably less well known so you would have to hear the lyrics to know they are Christmas songs. They are two of my favorite holiday songs.”
What do the holidays mean to you?
JP:  “It’s a time for the family to get together and try to put the troubles of the world aside for a short while.”
Do you have any annual family holiday traditions?
JP:  “We always open a gift the night before Christmas.  Now that the kids are older, we wake up and have brunch in front of the fire while opening the traditional Christmas stockings--that were handmade by their grandmother--and have hung on the mantle for years.  We take our time opening gifts and do not rip through them, making the day last as long as possible. We usually eat appetizers Christmas Day because we normally have a big Christmas Eve dinner, although it varies from year to year. We usually end up watching Chevy Chase’s Christmas Vacation and A Christmas Story with our family later in the day.”
You’ve talked a lot about your upbringing in your new book ROCKS, do you have a favorite holiday memory?
JP:  “There was a time after Aerosmith got back together when we were doing almost yearly New Year’s Eve shows. One of my favorite ones was at the Orpheum right before the New Year rang in--we dragged living room furniture onto the stage and brought our wives out and celebrated with our fans.”
As co-founding member, principal songwriter, electrifying lead guitarist and co-producer of Aerosmith--America’s Greatest Rock & Roll Band--JOE PERRY has achieved permanent iconic stature in the pantheon of rock. He has helped to drive his band, over the course of four decades, to sales of more than 150 million albums, critical acclaim, four Grammy Awards and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. PERRY's work with Aerosmith has resulted in an unending array of accolades and honors. In June 2013, PERRY was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame at the organization’s 44th Annual Induction and Awards Dinner. October 2014 saw the release of PERRY’s first book ROCKS: My Life In and Out of Aerosmith, which debuted on the New York Times Bestseller list at #8. Throughout the book, PERRY reflects on his career with Aerosmith and his life as a musician, husband and father.

JOE PERRY’S ‘Rocks: My Life In And Out Of Aerosmith’ On NYT Bestseller List

Since its October 7 release, JOE PERRY’s ROCKS: My Life In and Out of Aerosmith (Simon & Schuster) has spent its initial two weeks on the prestigious NEW YORK TIMES bestseller list.  ROCKS entered the charts at #8 and remained in the Top Ten (#10) in week two.  In the book, PERRY shares--with total candor and without apology--what life is like as the lead guitarist and co-head writer of Aerosmith
Perry has been in high demand, completing a cross-country book tour with multiple nights in New York, his Boston hometown (three in-stores), Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles and a stop at The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland. He has been equally busy with top-tier broadcast appearances on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Conan, CBS This Morning, Fox & Friends, Tavis Smiley, and Larry King alongside popular national radio including Howard Stern and Imus In The Morning.
Here’s some initial critical feedback on ROCKS:
“Well-paced [and] well-plotted. … Perry’s anecdotes could have been flown in from some ace rock ’n’ roll-centric novel, and do more than amuse; the best enlighten, not just about this band and the partnership at the core of it, but the very nature of creativity itself. … A mini-masterpiece, a term that, scaled back a touch further still, describes this able memoir.”
“Perry provides evocative portraits of his very American youth… The years of rock and roll notoriety are standard issue—drugs, partying, bad decisions—although the story shines on those rare occasions when Perry details the nuts and bolts of song making. Later chapters covering the manipulations of a Svengali-like producer have their own allure, as do the discussions of the complexity and expense of producing hits. … Perry’s book will strike gold with every Aerosmith fan.”
“Joe Perry reflects on his roller coaster of a life.”
--PARADE, 10-14-14
“With unvarnished candor, he tells his side of the toxicity.” Weeklings, 10-7-14
“The book stays true to Joe’s personality, offering a thoughtful, no-nonsense look at the highs and lows--followed by more highs and lows--of Aerosmith’s fascinating history.”, 10-7-14
“An honest reflection of the life and career of one of rock’s all-time greats. Perry pulls no punches in detailing the rise, fall and second coming of one of the greatest American rock bands. … Rocks really shines in its ability to showcase a different side of human nature and just what it takes to get along.”
--GUITAR WORLD, 10-8-14
--GIBSON, 10-7-14
“[Perry] chronicles the sometimes-turbulent 40-plus-year history of Aerosmith, which is what fans would hope. But beyond that, the 64-year-old artist's delightfully readable tome is the story of the boy who grew into the man who grew into the rock star who grew into the father and husband he is.”
“Perry is candid in detailing his sojourn in one of the most famously debauched-then-reborn--and debauched again, and reborn again--bands in history.”
“Brutally honest …. [a] delightfully readable tome.”

Beginning with a foreword by Johnny Depp ROCKS is both a study in brotherhood and solitude.  Throughout the book, Perry reflects on the people who stood beside him during the highs and lows as he and Aerosmith skyrocketed into a world of fame and utter excess. Before he was one half of the “Toxic Twins,” Perry was a science-obsessed kid who dreamed of becoming a marine biologist. His loving, supportive parents encouraged his curiosity and sent him to Vermont Academy where his love for rock and roll grew, along with his obsession for the guitar. Within weeks of graduating from Vermont Academy, Perry dropped out for refusing to cut his hair. By 1970, Perry and Tom Hamilton had been playing together for two years when they decided to move to Boston, rent an apartment and fill it with a band that we know today as Aerosmith. Aerosmith--featuring Steven Tyler, Joey Kramer and Brad Whitford alongside Perry and Hamilton--signed with Columbia Records in 1972.
In Perry’s own words, ROCKS tells the whole story--“the loner’s story, the band’s story, the recovery story, the cult story, the love story, the success story, the failure story, the rebirth story, the re-destruction story, and the post-destructive rebirth story”--of what came to pass over the next five decades and details the perks and perils that go hand-in-hand with an extreme rock and roll lifestyle. With over 100 photographs showing Perry’s life on- and off-stage, “[ROCKS] will strike gold with every Aerosmith fan” (Publishers Weekly).

TYPER & PERRY Redo Classic 'Dream On' For Boston Marathon

The world heard a new version of the AEROSMITH classic 'Dream On' during the Spring 2014 premiere of ESPN's award-winning news magazine show, E:60. Recorded in Los Angeles in early April, the song features Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, who are joined by the Southern California Children's Chorus on this arrangement of 'Dream On (Boston Strong 2014).' The track will be released today as a single via iTunes. In a powerful moment at last night's AEROSMITH concert at The Forum, in Inglewood, CA the band surprised the audience by bringing the Southern California Children's Chorus on stage to perform this special rendition of 'Dream On (Boston Strong 2014).'

I am so honored to release this version of 'Dream On' and to be able to have had the Southern California Children's Chorus perform with us last night was a beautiful moment, a true gift from up above," says Steven Tyler.

'The heinous act that took place during the Boston Marathon which shook not only the city but the world and touched us all demanded a positive response,' Joe Perry said.  'Boston Strong was that response and gave an example of our city's inner strength. I would like to think that the strength of our performance on 'Dream On' last night with the Southern California Children's Chorus in LA at the Forum was another rallying point for the goodness in all of us.'

R.I.P. DICK WAGNER, Former Alice Cooper Guitarist

R.I.P Dick Wagner. Another big loss to the rock world.
'Dick Wagner was the consummate gentleman axeman,' Kiss' Gene Simmons says.

Dick Wagner, the guitarist, songwriter and bandleader who worked with Alice Cooper, Lou Reed, Kiss and Aerosmith, among others, died Wednesday (July 30) at the age of 71 in Phoenix.

Wagner, who was also part of the groups The Frost and Ursa Major, had been hospitalized after contracting a lung infection following heart surgery in early July. Though he had posted a Facebook message on July 21 saying "I can't wait to play for you all again one day soon" -- signed "Dick'N THE ICU" -- Wagner was in a medically induced coma at the time of his death from respiratory failure.

"Dick Wagner was the consummate gentleman axeman. (He) will be missed," Kiss' Gene Simmons said in a statement on Wednesday, noting that Wagner played the "blistering" guitar solo on the Destroyer track "Sweet Pain." Kiss frontman Paul Stanley had this to say: "Dick was a stellar player and his work with Steve Hunter on Lou Reed's Rock&Roll Animal is legendary. He also did great work with Alice Cooper and uncredited ghosting on Destroyer and albums by some of our contemporaries. A huge talent with a huge tone and huge heart. A great unsung hero."
