Positive messages. They're just not "cool" today. If you're not praising a gangsta lifestyle or a hardcore beatdown it seems that the music buying public isn't interested. Unless you look deeper.
New Jersey's Rivera / Bomma aren't concerned with being part of the current trend. In fact they've never been overly concerned with what the mainstream audience has deemed "popular". Frontman, John Bomma explains, “It would be real easy to write songs that would appeal to the Top 40 crowd, but, because of our musical influences and our openness to the holy spirit we write from our hearts.” Wearing their musical influences on their sleeves, the eleven songs on Invisible Force are filled with the majestic melodies and pulsating rhythms made famous by seventies arena heroes such as Rainbow, Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult and others.
Formed in late 2000, the nucleus of Rivera / Bomma has always been the two band namesakes, lead vocalist, John Bomma and guitarist / multi-instrumentalist, Rod Rivera. "We have other band members that join us for shows but Rod and myself conceived the band ourselves" relates Bomma. Initially meeting in September of.2000 through mutual friend and producer Don Depaola, the duo knew right away that they could create something special together. While working with Depaola on his solo project, guitarist Rod Rivera and Don decided to find a vocalist for the song "Cry Of Love". “Don had worked with myself on many projects from high school on so they called me to give it a shot,” says Bomma. Once Rod and I met it was as if two long lost brothers had been reunited. It seemed as if we knew each other for years. The chemistry was so powerful and natural that we decided to write and put out Invisible Force”
Raised in decidedly Christian families, the decision to base their lyrical subject matter on positive messages and The Lord was a natural step for both John and Rod. “Life itself is so hard and the world is so negative that Rod and I believe through a positive message we can make the world a better place,” says John. Rather than drill a Christian message in to the listener, the duo would much rather present their views subtly. “We are by no means preachers, we are two average guys that sing and play hard rock music but also love the lord Jesus Christ. We're just trying to tell the world... 'Hey, there's a god and it's name is Jesus Christ, he will love you no matter how you look or what you've done in the past.' We're just letting people know there's another way - but, it's up to them to choose”
Kicking off with the piano instrumental title track then blasting into the fury of “Victory”, Rod Rivera's guitar mastery is evident from the very beginning as he throws out licks that Ritchie Blackmore would be very proud of. The breathtaking arrangement and orchestration of “Cry Of Love” leaves the listener astounded as the lyrics weave a tale of relationships and the importance of God to help guide those
relationships. The instrumental track, “Eclectic” lives up to it's name as it comes in five parts with musical
style variations ranging from balladic to a flamenco / calypso feel and straight forward hard rock. “Give You My Love” is driven by the incredible vocal delivery of John Bomma and “Full Moon In Spain” slides back into a slight calypso feel once again.
With negativity running rampant in the music industry these days a little bit of a positive outlook on things is a welcome breath of fresh air. With Rivera / Bomma being positive is a way of life, not a gimmick. Delivered with class and substance, John Bomma and Rod Rivera know when to draw the line at the message and to let the music do the talking. “Invisible force” indeed …
