In a career that spans nearly 30 years and includes over 50 album credits, Joe Lynn Turner ("JLT") remains one of rock and roll's most distinctive, soulful and expressive vocalists. Born in 1951 in New Jersey, he enjoyed his first taste of national success with Fandango, with whom he recorded 4 albums and toured with such artists as The Allman Brothers, The Beach Boys and Billy Joel.
After Fandango split, JLT received a call from legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. He was so impressed after his audition that he immediately enlisted Joe in Rainbow, the band that he formed after he left Deep Purple. Thanks also to Turner's contributions the group was catapulted to a new level of success especially in the USA. Turner co-wrote and/or sang on Rainbow singles that helped define the melodic rock genre: "I Surrender," "Can't Happen Here," "Jealous Lover," "Stone Cold," "Street of Dreams" and "Can't Let You Go."
In 1984, Blackmore reunited with Deep Purple. This gave Turner freedom to work on his first solo album, "Rescue You". In 1987, JLT joined Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force as both lead singer and songwriter. Their union resulted in "Odyssey," the most commercially successful album for Malmsteen ever.
In 1989, Deep Purple needed to find a lead singer to replace Ian Gillan. Turner was invited to audition and soon found himself fronting one of the major bands he was influenced by as a teenager! They released the album, "Slaves and Masters" and launched an extensive world tour.
During the 1990s, Joe took on many projects after leaving Purple. He joined Carmine Appice (Ozzy Osbourne), Bob Daisley (Ozzy Osbourne) and Jeff Watson (Night Ranger) in Mother's Army and eventually returned to the studio for his second solo effort, "Nothing's Changed." With the release of a couple of popular cover albums (“Undercover” and “Undercover 2”) and his third solo venture, "Hurry Up And Wait," the worldwide demand for his material increased dramatically. His subsequent solo albums - Holy Man," "Slam!" "JLT" and “The Usual Suspects” - enjoyed critical and commercial success. JLT also teamed up for three albums and two world tours with Glenn Hughes (Ex-Deep Purple/Black Sabbath) for The Hughes Turner Project (“HTP”). The HTP albums featured contributions from rock and roll icons as Grammy Award Winner Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Steve Vai, John Sykes and more.
“Second Hand Life” is Turner's new studio album, his tenth solo release. This time Joe wanted to go straight back to his melodic rock roots. Therefore, he worked on the songwriting with such luminaries as Jim Peterik (ex Survivor), Bob Held, Karl Cochran, Martin Briley. He also managed to include a track that he co-wrote with Ritchie Blackmore, Jim Peterik and Roger Glover entitled "Stroke of Midnight."
The players on the new disc include longtime collaborators Karl Cochran (Ace Frehley) on guitar and bass, Bob Held on bass, Gary Corbett on keyboards and former Damn Yankees - now with Lynyrd Skynyrd - drummer Michael Cartellone.
In Joe's words: “I would describe the new album as a hybrid between The Usual Suspects and Sunstorm, my recent studio project which received more positive reviews than any of my solo CDs since Rescue You. I felt that the fans wanted to hear more music in this melodic rock vein. So...I think we delivered on this forthcoming album”
