In my personal opinion, best album of 2003 generally is the marvellous KARNATAKA's effort("Delicate Flame Of Desire"). Vow. Another wonderful releases were made by OPETH("Damnation"), KAIPA("Keyholder") and polish SATELLITE("A Street Between Sunrise And Sunset"). As for melodic hard-rock, worthy of the names are: PRAYING MANTIS("Journey Goes On"), CORNERSTONE("Once Upon Our Yesterdays"), GLENN HUGHES("Songs In The Key Of Rock"), GOTTHARD("Human Zoo"), CIRCLE II CIRCLE("Watching In Silence"), MARK BOALS("Edge Of The World"), JOE LYNNE TURNER("JLT"), FOOL'S GARDEN("25 Miles To Kissimmee"). Glad to listen to all of them! Last year there were some disappointments too. For examples: ARTENSION, ROYAL HUNT, SAGA and, of course, such a sickening DREAM THEATER's work("Train Of Thought"),simply nightmare parody of Metallica. Will this meet your view?

***The BEST CDS OF 2003***
------------------------------------------
1. Shugaazer - Shugaazer (Paul Laine & the gang truly gave us "something worth waiting for"... Let's hope he'll still record with Danger Danger in the future as well)
2. Anthrax - We've Come For You All (these veterans came back from the dead and released their absolute BEST cd yet.)
3. 40 Foot Ringo - Funny thing ( Steve Brown finally returns to the scene with nu-breed at it's best...why aren't these guys signed to a major label in the U.S.???)
4. Johnny Lima - Made in California (another great effort that captures everything that was great about arena rock)
5. Stephen Pearcy - Social Intercourse (dripping with attitude... a killer punch in the gut with the sounds of early Ratt)
6. Attraction 65 - Attraction 65 (Gregg Fulkerson and company more than deliver the goods with some very strong material)
7. Perfect World -Perfect World (Kelly Hansen comes at us from a new pop angle & wins BIG!!!!!)
8. Stryper - Seven (yeah there was only the two new tracks but these guys still have "it" and should record another full length disc (C'mon Michael... )
9. Meat Loaf - Couldn't Have Said It Better (thanks to Nikki Sixx & co., the LARGE & In CHARGE MR. LOAF shows that he can pull it off w/ or w/o Mr. Steinman...... though I can't wait 'til Bat 3)
10. Harem Scarem -"Higher" (not quite "Weight of the World" but these guys are still at the top of the genre......)

How can you not make the new Bananas cd from Deep Purple the number one record? Purple is hitting on all cylinders and gave a great variety of great rock and roll to listen to. Steve Morse is a guitar god and everybody should know his name.

2003 has been the year of The Darkness and their domination will continue right through 2004."Permission To Land" has climbed to 39 in the USA Billboard 200, and is expected to break the top 10 when they embark on their American headline tour in March.
The "are they/aren't they taking the piss" debate will continue to rage with little chance of either side convincing the other they are right or wrong. However, those dismissing them as a flash in the pan are gravely short sighted and mistaken.Towards the end of the year we will see their follow-up studio album and if the quality of the recent b-side material is anything to go by, it's going to be absolutely sensational.Love them or loathe them, the Lowestoft combo have been a breath of fresh air and they WILL be around for many years to come.Long may they reign!

For myself i think it's been a wonderful year for all types of rock music. Even though i'm an old AOR HEAD , the quality of all the other kinds of rock, have i feel surpassed themselves this year [2003] , PROG in all it's forms , METAL getting more melodic and with better production. The rock world is in for a treat during 2004.

While as 2002 was the year of failed comeback albums, 2003 showed promise. First, I will start with the nu-breeds.

It started off with a bang when Evanescence released their debut album "Fallen", a smash hit no matter where you were (#3 in the USA, Top 10 in thirteen other countries.) But what happened to the rest of the nu-breeds? Andrew W.K. released "The Wolf" but it didn't have nearly as many cheesy party-rockers as the debut. Nickelback came back with a new album, but it didn't come remotely close to the success of "Silver Side Up"...but then, I already expected it wouldn't do better. At the end of the year, we saw the first of what could be a hundred Avril Lavigne clones when Fefe Dobson released her debut album in december. I told ya pop music isn't bad when it's held down by a few electric guitars!

That's enough of the nu-breeds, now on to melodic rock. 2003 was a rather dry year, at least from the stuff I purchased. Talisman "Cats and Dogs" satisfied my need for a new album, but didn't break any new grounds. Departure recorded "Corporate Wheel", which had their best singer to-date, but all that talent was lost in a sub-par production and the most average rock music they've ever written. Lana Lane released a decent covers collection, though I was not familiar with some of the groups that she covered. Nexx released "Colours", and while it is not the best female-fronted rock album of the year, it was still a solid effort.

However, one album stood above the rest, and that was Zak Steven's new group, Circle II Circle, and their album "Watching In Silence." It was everything a Savatage fan wants and then some. This was the album that Savatage failed to create with Poets & Madmen. Too bad Zak's whole band quit on him.

Overall, here's my Top 5 (includes albums I didn't mention):

1. Circle II Circle "Watching In Silence"
2. Evanescence "Fallen"
3. John Arch "Twist of Fate"
4. Nexx "Colours"
5. Once and Future King, Part 1

I think this was a great year for melodic metal, i think some of the older acts need to step up in 2004, such as POISON, CINDERELLA, DOKKEN, MOTLEY CRUE and then you got the various member bands such as RATT, WARRANT, LA GUNS and those bands that need to either try to get the original members back or call it a day with that band name. I hope i get to see the WHITE LION semi reunion, also i hope i get to see TNT in action this year. I hope we can get TONY HARNELL to come out with another MORNING WOOD album, 10 years after the first. Or at least another WEST WORLD album or maybe even his rumored SOLO album. Well here is my top 10 for 2003, in no certain order.........

1. TNT.....TASTE
2. PRETTY BOY FLOYD.......THE NITE BELONGS TO THE YOUNG
3. PRETTY BOY FLOYD......SIZE REALLY DOES MATTER
4. THE DARKNESS....PERMISSION TO LAND
5. HALESTORM........PIECES EP
6. FIREHOUSE.....PRIME TIME
7. MIKE TRAMP....ROCK N ROLL ALIVE
8. MELODIC ROCK COMPILATION ALBUM # 1
9. SKID ROW ....THICK SKIN
10. KORN.....TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR

I am looking for forward to :

1. the new TESLA album
2. the new WASP albums
3. the new TNT album
4. GLAM summer tours
5. METAL SLUDGE MSX 2 tour

by the way, my number 5 pick is a unsigned band out of Pennsylvania, USA by the name of HalestorM. they are a great band that has that classic melodic sound, check them out at www.halestormweb.com

1) Last Tribe : The uncrowned (one of the best melodic hardrock releases of the last 10 years )
2) Jim Jidhed : Full circle (the best pure AOR album of the year , what a singer )
3) Khymera (the best stuff that Steve Walsh sung in 15 years )
4) Space Odyssey : Embrace the galaxy (vocalist Patrick Johansson has got to be the biggest discovery of 2003)
5) Kamelot : Epica (another classic melodic metal album by these Americans)
6) Crystal Blue (the fourth Swedish band in my top 6 , this album includes only classy songs and not one filler )
7) Brian McDonald Project : Voyage (the most original album in my 10 ) .
8) Pride Of Lions (a classic in the making , but after 10 listens it's not from the same league as Vital Sings or The seventh one ) .
9) Brazen Abbot (Nikolo Kotzev has done it again , although Bad religion was a little bit better)
10) Bob Catley : When empires burn (the best solo album of Bob and it can compete with Magnum classics like Vigilante and Wings of heaven)
These bands complete my top 25 ; At Vance , Gary Hughes , Vertigo , Stratovarius , Twilightning , On The Rise , Outland , Harmony , Drive She Said , Iron Maiden , Masterplan , Sonata Arctica , Ramos , Section A and Domain .

With some CDs that I have yet to listen to (especially some melodic releases that I recently purchased or am going to like
Pride of Lions, Newman, Thunder, Departure, and Ramos), these are some of my not-too heavy choices in no particular order, except for the first one:

1. Deep Purple - Bananas (what a fantastic album, and 'Haunted' is hands down the best song of the year, and one of the best ever, no kidding)
2. Opeth - Damnation (Beatifully conceived)
3
4. Dream Theater - Train of Thought (that is some heavy stuff)
5. Waltham - Permission to Build (Got it new for $7.99 at my favorite record store. What an amazing slab of Nu-breed)
6. Masterplan - Masterplan (Better than the last Helloween. Catchy melodic metal with the unmistakable and great voice of Jorn Lande. What else can you ask for?)
7. Circle II Circle - Circle II Circle (Zak Stevens can do no wrong, especially with Caffery and Oliva helping him out)
8. Iron Maiden - Dance of Death (Some great galloping Classic Heavy Metal)
9. Nevermore - Enemies of Reality (Warrel Dane is crazy, but can do no wrong)...Ok a little heavier this one..sorry
10. Skid Row - Thickskin (Some bad reviews, but I think it provides a good dose of modern hard rock well done)

Finally a good year for AOR, after years of tragedy. But 2004 looks to be disappointing, very disappointing ! No sign of my fave acts Foreigner, Survivor and the mighty Legs Diamond. Only hope they will ever release a new CD ! Same for the underrated Norway and Shooting Star ! And I expected finally a new Mecca, but it seems I'm dreamin' ! Same for Giant ! Also a shame Ambition won't see the light of day, neither will Lidll/Rush ! And I hope Diving For Pearls will come with another goodie, but they are on Atenzia and I fear they will also release a nu-breed record !
My biggest joy : Vonray is no more and nu-breed is already dying, as is nu-metal ! GREAT ! But it's sad to see a band like The Darkness doing big business, while far more talented acts (Pride Of Lions to name one) are ignored ! Money and promotion make or brake a band, not the quality or talent ! A pity ! TIP : look out for the new Dakota : Deep 6 (class all written over it, what a band !), Hugo and Seventh Key. Tesla and House Of Lords will be big disappointments after hearing some soundclips ! And finally, here's my top 20 of 2004^:

01. Pride Of Lions : Pride Of Lions (head an shoulders above !)
02. Dream Theater : Train Of Thought (bes progressice act ever)
03. Ramos : Livin' In The Light
04. Vertigo : Vertigo
05. Outland : Different Worlds
06. Double Cross : Time After Time
07. Cornerstone : Once Upon Our Yesterdays
08. Y&T : Unearthed (best hardrockband ever)
09. Departure : Corporate Wheel
10. First Shot : Midnight Madness
11. Silver : Intruder
12. Hughes/Turner : Hughes/Turner2
13. Drive She Said : Real Life
14. Masterplan : Masterplan
15. Power Of Omens : Rooms Of Anguish (search this band out !)
16. Brazen Abbot: Guilty As Sin
17. Magellan : Impossible Figures
18. Newman : Sign Of The Modern Times
19. Firewind : Burning Earth
20. Artension : New Discovery

Best reissue : Zon and Streets (not many big rereales this year, still waiting on a digitally remastered CD version of Roadmaster : Sweet Music, Preview, Fortune (pre-Harlan Cage !), Hounds, Creed from 1978 etc. !!!!)

Biggest disappointment : once again Harem Scarem and a mag like Classic Rock ! (no heart for melodic rock at all !)and all the people turning their back to AOR and jumping on the nu-breed/modern rock wagon ! Sad but true !

Keep rockin' !
Best to you for
