The TOP 10 CDs of 1999 according to KLCR
-------------------------------------------------------------
1. Marvelous 3 - "Hey, Album" (power pop masterpiece.... ...... clever lyrics, catchy choruses & hooks abound... Butch Walker is the DUDE!!!! Fav tracks: "Indie queen"," Vampires in love"," You're so yesterday" ,"#27", "Freak of the week")

2. Rick Springfield - "Karma" (return of the MAN, the MYTH, the LEGEND,....if he would have looked like Tom Petty or John Cougar, he would gotten the respect that he truly deserves...... fav tracks: "Prayer", "Free","Religion of the heart", "Itsalwayssomething")

3. KISS - "Psycho Circus" (underrated effort by the old school... of couse it's formulaic but ... it worked....... fav tracks: "We are one" (I was shocked this song wasn't officially released as as single...it would have been HUGE...., "Psycho circus", "Raise your glasses")

4.. Bride - "Oddities" (bold and uncompromising...Fav tracks: "Why won't he break", "Under the blood")

5. TNT - "Transistor" (incredible blend of classic TNT with the modern "Firefly" sound.....LeTekro/Harnell combo is tough to beat...... Fav tracks: "Just like God" (awesome), "No such thing", "Wide awake", "Crashing down")

6.. Dokken - "Erase the Slate" (return to form from these veterans and Reb Beach does an excellent job but there is only one George Lynch...fav tracks: "Change the world", "Erase the Slate", "One", "Maddest hatter")

6. Eddie Money -"Ready Eddie" (dumb album title but one of the best albums of his career thanks to the one and only Frankie Sullivan......fav tracks: "Can't go on" (awesome power ballad), "Don't say no tonight" ("Take me home tonight" revisted without Ronnie Spector this go 'round)

7.Corey Hart -"Jade" (cool, laid back ...well crafted CHR.... fav tracks: "Break the chain", "So visible (easy to miss)")

8. RATT - "Ratt" (not what I was hoping for but still a decent effort... John Kalodner is not the dude he thinks he is..... fav tracks: "Live for today", "Over the edge")

9. Lillian Axe - "Field of Yesterday" (classic rarities that finally get to see the light of day.... wish the production would have been better but compared to the tapes I previously had this was excellent... hopefully, they will reunite and record again... fav tracks: "When it rains", "Become a monster", "Pullin the rats out")

10. Blink 182 - "Enema of the State" (so this is not the typical melodic rock but it was a fun carefree disc...fav tracks: "All the small things", "Dysentary Gary", "What's my age again?")

Honorable mentions:: cds/singles

Paul Gilbert -"Girl crazy" (one of the best singles of the year)
Lit -"My own worst enemy" (catchy rockin' blast)
Bon Jovi - "Real life" (great song about the realities of love, life and all that other kind of stuff in which you always seem to be on the short end of)
Collective Soul - "Dosage" ("Run", "Heavy", "Dandy life")
Marilyn Manson - "Rock is dead" ("Beautiful people" turned on its side w/ a techno twist)
the Moffatts -"Misery" (great pop/rock song that blew away all the non-instrument playing boy bands)
Kid Rock - "Bawitdaba" (from the first listen you could tell this was to be a smash... though it did get old after seeing the video on MTV a thousand times)
Jessica Simpson -"I wanna love you forever" (the legs...I mean the lungs on this babe.. I mean artist)
The Corrs - ( this family group makes the Jacksons look like the Jets)
Three Colours Red - "Beautiful day" (pop masterpiece that transcends space and time while carrying you into another dimension)
Creed - "What's this life for" ("don't wanna settle the score" .........a gd good song (no pun intended)
Britney Spears (one word: jailbait)
Big Bad Wolf - "Blame it on rock" (this one sums life up for all us at melodicrock.com)

23/03/00: Zej - zej6@hotmail.com
In no particular order:

Dokken - Erase the Slate

This is quite possibly Dokken's best CD. Reb Beach's playing is a great addition to the band and they sound tight and in full form. George who?

Queensr˙che - Q2K

Definitely NOT the R˙che's best CD, and a very dull one at that, considering their previous work. However, given the lame state of musical tendencies, this happenes to be a fine piece of work and in many ways an interesting exposure to other aspects of the band. Hopefully this is merely a window into a new R˙che. Could've lost a track or two, though.

Def Leppard - Euphoria

Da Leps went back to their roots but in a hi-tech way. Not their best, but highly enjoyable.

Mr. Big - Get Over It

Without a doubt one of the better works of the year, despite the presence of Richie Kotzen, who is a great player but sounds to me like he wants to be overbearing no matter what (remember Poison's Native Tongue, a fantastic album but too Kotzen-like?). In this case, his duet with Eric Martin (also heard on the b-side "You don't have to be strong") shows how important he is to himself. But I won't touch his guitar playing: a work of art. Other than a few tracks, this is a great addition to the superb Mr. Big albums released before.

Dream Theater - Metropolis II: Scenes from a Memory

One of the best CD's this band has done and one of the best of the year.

PBF-Porn Stars

A "best of", of sorts, and pretty good. Glam at it's mascara- covered best. And new tunes that go great with it. Too bad it missed a couple of fine tunes off "Wiseguy"

TNT-Transistor

A fantastic album. 'Nuff said.

Mötley Crüe - Live: Entertainment or Death

A fine live album, but rather disorienting. Still, hard to top.

Metallica - S&M

I'm not Metallic'as biggest fan, and mostly I detest their self-indulgence, but this double album has the best work they've ever done since "MOP" and the black CD. Classic tunes in a creative environment. Wow!

Other fine CD's are Slaughter's "Back to Reality" (though a step back from their great "Revolution") Firehouse's "Category 5" (A bit slow and dull at times, but better than many other acts), Cinderella's "Live at the Key Club" (too bad this band keeps skipping hteir finest work: "Still Climbing"), Guns 'n' Roses' "Live 87-93" (An OK collection with decent interpretations), Sebastian Bach's "Bring 'em Bach alive!" (so-so live album and forgettable studio tracks, but at least a promise of what's to come from the guy who was once called "the man born to sing heavy metal"), Lillian Axe's "Fields of Yesterday" (their worst, but then again, it IS a collection of rarities. Even though it's their worst CD it is a great listen and it's hard to top their previous fabulous CD's), Enuff Z'nuff's "Paraphernalia" (it doesn't beat "Seven" or "Strength", but it's a very darn good CD), Westworld's debut (I didn't love it, but there are two tracks that simply kicked ass: "I Belong" and "Suicide"), Ratt's "Ratt" (so-so release, but enjoyable), Union's "Live in the galaxy" (very fine live album), Buckcherry's debut (nive hard rock with a bit of sleaze) and, correct me if I'm wrong, Velocity's "Impact" (I don't know if it's 1999 or earlier, but it was a damn fine album).

Since TNT's Transistor sucked, at least we had this one to think of the days of old!!! Good stuff!

Jaded Heart-IV
What can I say?? These guys never fail to impress! Well worth the wait!

Emerald Rain-Age Of Innocence
These guys are doing what Harem Scarem COULD be doing! Don't get me wrong, I love HS, but the new one was a bit disappointing!

King Of Darkness-Aggression In Rage
This is a demo from an unsigned Japanese band. More towards the metal side, but the guitar playing is incredible. Hope a deal is around the corner!!

Network-Crashing Hollywood
A true masterpiece! This is what its all about, and the way it should always be!!!

Millenium-Angelfire
Great disc from this Florida based band!

Enuff Znuff-Paraphernalia
OK--so they sound kinda alternative, but these guys still know how to do it!!

Heaven's Edge-Some Other Place, Some Other Time
OK-This came out in late 98, but I didn't have omline access then! Welcome back guys!! Is a full-blown reunion in the works???

So there ya have it!! You agree, disagree, kick my face in. whatever!!!

Sorry, I forgot just one great Cd from ´99 that didn´t came to mind at the moment i was writing about my faves from 99. TNT´s ´Transistor´. this is just a great record with one of the best vocals ever adn groovy songs with great melodies and hooks througout the entire album.

29/12/99: Max K - metalmastermax@hotmail.com
In order from ten to one here is my list of the ten favorites from 99:

10. Heartland - When angels call (A really nice album of acoustic tunes, including a title track that is just beautiful. With this album I introduced myself to Heartland and I´m glad I did)

9. Saxon - Metalhead (The always great Saxon comes with a new great album, as always, though not as great as its predecessor ´Unleash the beast´.

8. Jaded heart - IV (I just introduced myself to this great band, and this album really kicks ass with heavy aor melodic rock and beautiful ballads. I like also the two well done covers).

7. Ratt - Ratt (A decent new effort from the guys with unexpected sort-of-ballads and the always-Ratt-sound).

6. Slaughter - Back to reality (A strong new record with new guitarist Jeff Blando, a little different than previous efforts but worth the wait with cool strong grooves, riffs and very nice ballads).

5. Dokken –Erase the slate (A new album, a new great guitarist for the band, the always powerful voice of Don Dokken, no more experimentations, just straight ahead hard rock with a few twists in the same vein, a great cover - ´One´ from Three dog night-; what else can you ask from this hard rock heroes?.

4. Dream theater – Metropolis II-Scenes from a memory (The reviews read like this was an excellent record from this progressive metal kings, and sure it is. Well crafted musicianship in a concept story that don´t let the music speak for itself but introduces you to the story so you can make your own conclusions. ´Through her eyes´ is one of the most beautiful ballads –and songs- I have ever heard in my life.

3. Great white – Can´t get there from here (My current second favorite band after the mighty Metallica –this first position is never going to change-. This album is just groovy and melancholic. Nice bluesy rockers and great ballads as only GW can do it.

2. Def Leppard – Euphoria (the guys are back to their most successful sound of ´Pyromania´ and ´Hysteria´. Excellent songs and beautiful ballads. ´Promises´ is just a great song, so its ´Goodbye´ and ´Guilty´.

1. Jim Jamison´s Survivor - Empires (Ok, I didn´t know that JJ was back and the rest was out of this great project called Survivor, but now I know that JJ has put out an excellent record without the other boys. ´Cry tough´ its one of the greatest songs ever recorded. I´m really glad I didn´t wait for the album to come to the US as a general comercial release.

Note: The disappointment (although not a big one for me, given that nobody saw it coming) of the year were the Scorpions with ´Eye to eye´. Some really nice ballads as always and maybe one or two rockers, but that´s it.

29/12/99: Brad Duren - Uriah768@aol.com
My top ten albums of 1999...and it was VERY hard to choose just ten. In no particular order:

1. CREED--Human Clay
Great songwriting...melodic but heavy music...and one of the best live shows I have seen in a long time. The hype is deserved.
2. SPEAKER--Orizaba
Three-piece Los Angeles band that got little or no attention thanks to zero push from their label Capricorn. Catchy melodies, great vocals, and superb songwriting overall. Worth seeking out.
3. URIAH HEEP--Sonic Origami
As this veteran band approaches thirty years, they continue to deliver the goods. Solid performances, great songs, and excellent production job from Pip Williams make this a must.
4. DREAM THEATER--Scenes from a Memory
Although the concept still doesn't do much for me, the songs and performances stand on their own. Keyboardist Jordan Rudess is a fantastic addition to an already amazing band.
5. STONE TEMPLE PILOTS--No. 4
Arguably the best album by the boys from San Diego. Catchy but heavy, it grows better with each listen. If Scott Weiland can kick the horse, this band will be around for a long time.
6. SPOCK'S BEARD--Day for Night
What can be said that hasn't been said about SB. Another solid slab of prog-pop that gets in your head and stays there. Let's hope this band will one day receive the attention it deserves.
7. FOO FIGHTERS--There is Nothing Left to Lose
Although I was not a huge fan of Nirvana, Dave Grohl has shown he knows how to write great songs. This is fun rock and roll at its best, and "Learn to Fly" has my vote for one of the best singles (and videos) of the year.
8. METALLICA--S & M
Majestic...heavy...hypnotic...beautiful. One of the better marriages of orchestra and rock. Worth having even if you are not a Metallica fan.
9. PLATYPUS--When Pus Comes to Shove
Supergroup (Ty Tabor of King's X, John Myung of Dream Theater, Rod Morgenstein of Winger and the Dixie Dregs, and Derek Sherinian of Dream Theater and Alice Cooper) that actually lives up to its promise. Mindblowing compositions and musicianship that still manages to be accessible.
10. (tie) FILTER--Title of Record and DOKKEN--Erase the Slate
Filter is one band that has impressed me with this release. It is heavy and angst-ridden in a way that Marilyn (Poser) Manson only dreams about. Solid. Dokken's latest is their finest album since the reunion, and Reb Beach's guitar work shines. George Lynch made a BIG mistake leaving this band.

Honorable mentions:
VIGILANTES OF LOVE--Audible Sigh
TOTO--Mindfields
JASON FALKNER--Can You Still Feel?
COLLECTIVE SOUL--Dosage
77s--e.p.
EVIL WINGS--Colors of the New World (indie release)
DRAIN sth--Freaks of Nature
KEN HENSLEY--A Glimpse of Glory
CAROLINE'S SPINE--Attention Please
CHEAP TRICK--Music for Hangovers

The "give it up" nominees:
1. Queensryche...Q2K has my nomination for worst album of the year.
2. George Lynch...nothing more needs to be said.
3. KISS...stop the marketing and just play the music.
4. Tommy Lee...see George Lynch.
5. Steve Perry..."earth to Steve...come in Steve...you are losing it...come in Steve..."

HAPPY Y2K!

29/12/99: JACE - JPAWLAK@DMXSYS.COM
No real order (just as they come to me) [and some may be 1998, I can't keep them straight anymore) please forgive me.

1. Dokken- Erase The Slate
2. Def Leppard- Euphoria
3. Eddie Money- Ready Eddie
4. Sammy Hagar- Red Voodoo
5. Bryan Adams- On A Day Like Today
6. Brian Howe- Tangled In Blue
7. The Storm- Eye Of The Storm
8. Melissa Etheridge- Breakdown
9. SheDaisy- The Whole She-Bang (Yeah, it's not AOR but it IS produced by Dann Huff, that should count for something)
10. Faith Hill- Breathe. Again, I know it's not AOR but it really is a great album.

Biggest disappointments- Scorpians, Sleelhouse Lane (sorry, Andrew), and Motley Crue.

Sellout award of the decade- George Lynch.

The ten best albums of 99 (at least in my opinion) are summed up here. Of course there's the possibility of running into a
previously unknown gem. This could happen tomorrow, within a month or it may even take years... but then the list changes.
Until that happens the list is as follows:

1. Danny Danzi-Somewhere Lost In Time

For a long time Johnny Lima's album was my favorite album this year. And I still love it to bits. Actually we're talking about
a tie here. But I don't like ties so I decided to put the big little man from Danziland at the top of my chart.
Why? Simple: Because of the guitars, which I simply adore... S.L.I.T. has the same vibes as Shine On, but Danny's guitars
simply gives me the chills everytime I hear them. Have you heard the solo on Is Love A Lie? If so, you'll know exactly what I
mean...

2. Johnny Lima-Shine On

My number two feelgood album of 99. I couldn't believe the pure cheer this album radiated into my living room when I first
played it.
Bon Jovi influences? Sure! Def Leppard influences? No doubt! White Lion influences? Absolutely! But who cares when an artist
is able to blend all this into his own style? I haven't felt this good listening to an album since the 80's. Mr. Lima and Mr. Danzi
sure made 99 a remarkable year for me...

3. Bob Catley- Legends

Aah, Bob Catley. One of my all time favorite singers. Last year he did this abulous debut album and now he comes up with
Legends, an even better effort. Gary Hughes shows he is still able to write great songs. It's a shame the Spellbound album
wasn't this good.

4. Jaime Kyle-The Best Of My Heart

5. Dream Theater-Metropolis PT 2: Scenes From A Memory

6. Harlan Cage-Forbidden Colors

7. Jimi Jamison's Survivor-Empires

8. The Promise-Human Fire

9. Damned Nation-Road Of Desire

10. Emerald Rain-Age Of Innoncence

My top 25 can be found at Majestic Magazine.

29/12/99: Paul - Paul@poptop.com
1. Def Leppard --Euphoria-- a strong A........a couple tracks that have a fresh sound but all of the songs jam even if they are stepping back to an older sound. IF you have not heard "Burnout" you are missing out.
2. Steelhouse Lane -- Slaves -- great 80's rock........better than their first cd in my opinion.
3. ten - Spellbound -- this album grew on me as well.....it was my first Ten record........a few classic songs on here. We rule the night--- WOnderland!!
4. Stuart Smith-- I was expecting more blues rock but this album groes on you big time. When a blind man cries!!!
5.The new Tonic is a great cd........good listening album.
6. Rick Springfield (B+)....... I want to hear the harder edge of Rick........tear it all down/ Livin in oz/ Motel eyes....everybody's girl.......get that energy back. This album had it's moments.

Here's my top 10, which i don't think is possible to put down, because there has been many great releases in the pop/rock
genre outside aor and melodic rock.

So here we go :

1. Steelhouse Lane : Slaves Of The New World
2. Dream Theater : Metrolpolis II: Scenes from a Memory
3. Jaded Heart : IV
4. Taxiride : Imaginate
5. Melissa Etheridge : Breakdown
6. Bachelor Girl : Waiting For The Day
7. Kyle Vincent : Wow & Flutter
8. Live : The Distance To Here
9. Amanda Marshall : Tuesday's Child
10. Michael Schenker Group : The Unforgiven

29/12/99: Patrick - b.cool@free.fr
1 - GREAT WHITE "Can't Get There From Here"
Their best album ever, for me, even if they've released some gems before. Jack Russel's vocals are perfect and Mark Kendall guitar playing is ever so damn good ! From the opening rocker "Rollin'Stoned" to the emotionnal closer "Hey Mister", simply listen to a masterpiece.
2 - TOTO "Mindfields"
Good to have Bobby back in the band. Great songs like "Mad About You", "After You've Gone", "Cruel", "Caught In The Balance"...and the japanese-only "Spanish Steps". More than a good Toto album : a masterpiece too !
3 - THUNDER "Giving The Game Away"
An interesting evolution for UK most brilliant act for ages.
They sound more mature on it. Sadly that title was a premonition...
4 - MR BIG "Get Over It"
Another good surprise ! R.Kotzen is a wise choice as the new guitarist. The more I listen to it, the more it grows on me, the more I love it.
5 - .38 SPECIAL "Live From Sturgis"
While listening to this release, you wish you've been in Sturgis in August to be "Rockin' Into The Night" with all these bikers !
6 - DEF LEPPARD "Euphoria"
A bit disappointed at first (maybe due to the production).
Includes good and average songs, but it's a good return overall.
7 - AMANDA MARSHALL "Tuesday's Child"
Not so impressive as her 1996 eponymous debut album, but quite enjoyable yet. Great voice.
8 - GREAT WHITE "Psycho City (Remastered + 4 tracks)"
The 'most-underrated-album' of 1991 receive a desserved reissue with bonus tracks. "Love Is A Lie" is one of the more emmotionnal song I've ever heard...
9 - SHERYL CROW "Live From Central Park"
A good surprise, Sheryl having fun on stage with all her friends. Nice version of "White Room" featuring Eric C himself.
10 - TONY JOE WHITE "One Hot July"
Certainly not AOR, but simply good great cool music (!) from Mister TJW. So relax and enjoy it.

Big 1999 disappointments : Scorpions, Gary Moore, ZZ Top ...

29/12/99: Adam - jdick5@hotmail.com
Best:
1. Rick Springfield-Karma
2. Mike Tramp-Remembering White Lion
3. Def Leppard-Euphoria
4. Billy McLaughlin-Out of Hand (most of you probably have not heard of Billy, you should remedy that ASAP)
5. Eddie Money-Readdy Eddie
6. Megadeath-Risk
7. Hal Ketchum-Awaiting Redemption (if Gerg can put a Country/Rock album on the list, so can I!)

Worst:
1. Poison-Crack a Smile-I have be waiting patiently for about 5 years for this album. What is the hold up!

29/12/99: Greg Eller - lepfreak@intecnet.net
I haven't bought 10 albums in '99, but here's the best of what I got:
6)Firehouse-Category 5
5)Network-Crashin' Hollywood
4)Michael Morales-That's The Way
3)Von Groove-Test of Faith
2)Big Bad Wolf-S/T
1)Def Leppard-Euphoria
What can I say. Lep rules. However, it's not exactly what they said it was gonna be. According to Leppard,
Euphoria was suppose to fall between the sounds of Pyro...and Hysteria. To me, it falls between Retro.. and
Slang. Still, far and away, the best of '99.

29/12/99: fritz - neytif@aol.com
1) Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society Sonic Brew(I know not really Aor or melodic but great!!)

6) Fish - Raingods with zippos (old strengths.....)
7) Dave Meniketti - On the blue side
8) Thunder - Giving the game away
9) Tom Jones - Reload (great fun, great voice...the tiger!)
10) Graham Bonnet - the day I went mad (still a good singer)

29/12/99: Ive Michiels - aor.ive@mailandnews.com
1) Steelhouse Lane : Slaves of the new world ( perfect melodic hardrock ) .
2) Yngwie Malmsteen : Alchemy ( the best guitarist ever - who the fuck is Jimi Hendrix ) .
3)Damned Nation : Road of desire ( fantistic scandinavian melodic rock ) .
4) Survivor : Empires ( not as good as Vital Signs or When seconds count but Jimi Jamison is definetly the best singer ever ) .
5) Harlan Cage : Forbidden colours ( another example of perfect melodic rock ) .
6) Balance Of Power : Ten more tales ( not as good as Book of secrets but definetly the best melodic metal release of 1999 )
7) Metropolis : The power of the night ( the best Stan Meissner has ever done , great lead vocals by Peter Fredette ) .
8) Mark Spiro : The stuff that dreams are made off ( I still think Now is then , then is now is better , but this album has profen again the Mark Spiro together with Mike Slamer is the best songwriter in the AOR-melodic rock business ) .
9) Ten : Spellbound ( their best cd untill now ) .
10) Johnny Lima : Shine on ( the best Bon Jovi cd ever )

29/12/99: Billy M - zekejunior@aol.com

28/12/99: Chris Mazzeo - mazzeoc@aol.com
10. Richie Kotzen- Break It All Down- great cd from this guitarist who can sing as good as he plays

9. MSG- Unforgiven- Kelly Keeling on vocals adds some talent to this release. Anyone who remembers Baton Rouge in the late 80's knows this guy can sing.

8. Gary Moore- A Different Beat- his second cd in his new style gives us some more good music. He seems to do 3 cds in a certain style, so we can expect one more like this. Some good stuff but the Hendrix cover could have been left off

7. Mr Big- Get Over it- the addition of Richie Kotzen gives them vocal depth and a chance to do something they didnt before, have someone sing backup to eric martin. He also does some leads which is cool. Good cd

6. Tal Bachman- S/T a great power pop cd from this second generation rocker. Reminds me on Cheap Trick a little

5. The Tea Party- Tryptch - good cd from these Canadian rockers. Lead singer reminds me of Jim Morrison. This could be the 90's version of the Doors

4. Charlie Farren- Deja Blue- What a vocal talent this former lead singer of Farrenheit and Joe Perry Project is. He could rival anyone as a singer. Just him and a guitar here

3. Glenn Hughes- The Way it is- A great cd from the best singer ever. Cant wait for his Archive release next year. This one is a straight rocker. The Hendrix cover is the only one that doesnt work.

2. Rob Lamothe- I AM Here Now- simply the best vocalist/ Songwriter I have ever heard....ever.....Glenn Hughes gets beat on songwriting. This is someone worth checking out. The former lead singer of the Riverdogs is simply amazing.

1. Mr Bungle- California- What can I say....I have Bungle fever

1. Big Country - Driving to Damascus
- their best album in many years, with Stuart Adamson's adoption of Christianity leading to a new musical and lyrical invention, and "Dive Into Me" is a superb song in the classic Big Country vein. A pity that Mr Adamson subsequently had an attack of the willies and decided to jack it all in
2. Change of Heart - Change of Heart
- an impressive and surprisingly hard-rocking debut from this British melodic rock band who sound not unlike a mixture of Journey and Asia fronted by Paul Rodgers soundalike Alan Clark
3. Def Leppard - Euphoria
- maybe a step back in evolutionary terms, but full of tunes and full of life where "Slang" at times sounded like an exercise in being different for the sake of it. Standout track is the awesome "Paper Sun"
4. Emerald Rain - Broken Saviours
- some may say it's more than a touch derivative, but I was hooked by this immaculately-produced mixture of powerful hard rock and stunning vocal harmonies
5. Jethro Tull - J.Tull.com
- the original rock'n'roll curmudgeon has produced his best work since "Crest of a Knave", full of variety and melodic invention, never sounding tired, and does anyone write lyrics as intelligent and puzzling as Ian Anderson?
6. Jaime Kyle - The Best of My Heart
- a retrospective of this highly talented singer-songwriter who has written numerous hits for other people but not so far enjoyed the success she richly deserves as a solo artist. What can Sheryl Crow do that Jaime Kyle can't? (and she's a rather fetching lady too!)
7. Roxette - Have a Nice Day
- after four years away, Per Gessle's ear for a great pop tune and Marie's wonderful voice are as good as ever. "Beautiful Things" is a ballad to match "Listen to Your Heart"
8. Stuart Smith - Heaven and Earth
- a stunning blues-based hard rock album from this relatively unknown guitarist who has assembled a stellar cast of guests including Richie Sambora and Glenn Hughes. And they really show some lesser mortals like Gomez how real men play the blues!
9. Patty Smyth - Greatest Hits (Columbia/Legacy)
- an excellent collection featuring the distinctive voice and intelligent songwriting of the highly talented but never prolific current Mrs John McEnroe
10. Jimi Jamison's Survivor - Empires
- a superb AOR album with a good mix of ballads and more powerful material, and Jamison shows he still has one of the finest voices in rock

OK, some of these shade into 1998, but I first heard them in 99! And not everything falls within the normal compass of this site - but who cares? And I'd like to bet that the most purchased album of 1999 amongst regular readers was Shania Twain!
