Drums are supposed to be recorded raw, but still good-sounding. It's the mix that makes the difference. When I record drums, I only add some high freq (6k) and cut some boxy mids out of the toms. No other eq or compression, just microphone placement and good drum tuning. And a good player, hopefully! Cheers, Erkka

I visited the studio where they were recording drums recently, The stuff sounds just like Firetribe! Kalle was playing his ass off... Erkka

And one thing worth mentioning is that The Edge has created a totally unique signature style, which is something that less than 99.9% of musicians will never achieve. What would modern pop guitar be without him? Erkka

Fantastic show! Fun stuff and we had a lot of good laughs. As for musical performance, Michael's vocals were very good and VERY LIVE. Also, the hard disk backing vocals were pretty much buried in the mix so you were able to hear the real backing vocals. Satchel had some harmony stuff coming from the hard disk for solos but I heard no rhythm guitar parts there. The production looked good so

I'd say that most people dissing this here are not basing their opinions on musical things. The mix IS horrible, though.

Geez that Turku is a difficult city to play in. It seems that if even a quality gig costs something the people don't want to come. If you're gonna do Legends in Helsinki I would reckon that it's gonna be a bit bigger venue than Apollo..? Need a support band? I have a cool thing in the works, will pm you right away. Erkka

Tony, did you play for free AND pay for your own flights? No pun intended, just wanna know, since that's what Urban Tale did. And for Mr. Rocknut... A guitar with a case weights around 11-13 kgs. If you have 2 guitars its already 22-26 kgs and your limit in tourist class is 15 kg. That doesn't leave too much for luggage, does it? And what about your pedals, cables etc? It's WAY too easy to go

So you'd rather have bands turning up with no equipment? It's not a fault. My opinion is that especially for bands that are not getting paid to play the overweight fees should be covered by the festival or record company. Been there a couple times, it's not fun.

iTunes is slightly better. If anybody remembers the famous Lady Gaga Spotify payment, was it around $150 for 1,500,000 listens... Here's a fantastic service for independent bands and musicians to get their music to digital market and actually get a fair percentage of the sales: http://www.tunecore.com/ I have several friends who use this service and they all like it.

iTunes indeed does pay royalties, and they pay a lot better than Spotify. Buying single songs is ok in a lot of cases even though I am old enough to dig entire albums. But iTunes isn't problem free either. The entire reason iTunes was created was to sell hardware. Apple's policy is to sell underpriced music and software and cover it by selling overpriced hardware (Macs, macbooks, iPhones, iPods e

$30,000 is around €22.600... It depends. This is an ok budget for a band album if there's no travel or hotel costs or outside session musicians, techs, rental gear, arrangers etc. It costs about €500/day here in Finland to record in a quality studio with an engineer. Of course it helps if the producer can engineer him/herself but that's not always the case and cannot be required. I like to ha

Don't teach daddy how to f*ck. Did you actually read through the text? All 3 parts so far? It's not just about illegal file-sharing. It's about the entire unethical business that the tech companies have built around digital music distribution (both illegal and legal) which has led to the situation where artists get even less money for their sales than before even though the tech companies adverti

As I know there's a lot of musicians, players, instrument owners, songwriters etc. hanging out on this site so I decided to post this one here also. The following blog writing is a fantastic eye-opener on the ways how the tech business exploits the music industry on the internet. The author is David Lowery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Lowery. Sorry, he's not a melodic rock artist but it's

If the sales balance was still negative in sales royalties vs. advances one would think that Frontiers would have no problem supplying Toto with accurate balance statements, right? I guess that this was also a big issue. A negative royalty statement is still a statement. I get a few of these "0 Eur paid" royalty statements every 6 months. Cracks me up every time :)

I don't think that Frontiers is entitled to any "radio play royalty" unless Toto has made a publishing deal with them which I highly doubt. Guys in that league usually have existing publishing contracts. The copyright money belongs to the songwriters and publishing companies, not record labels.

I have to say that I was not too impressed by the YouTube link. The first thing that I noticed was the drummer's lazy approach to "Another One Bites The Dust". The song should be tighter than a duck's a**... Then the vocalist's time feel. Not good nor grooving. Hopefully Jeff will point these things out and make the band work on them.
