Book signings are really about the book store

A book signing at a book store is a business partnership between the store and the author.

The store doesn't care that you already own a particular book. They don't care that this may be your only chance to get up close with the author. They care about one thing... selling a lot of books that day... books by that author and hopefully more books that you might buy since you're in the store.

So it makes perfect sense that they don't want the line filled with people who bought the book somewhere else, or have a bunch of other things to sign. Buying the book that day is the cost of line entry and helps ensure the line isn't filled with people who are there to get their '84 concert shirt signed and who knows what else.

If an author just wanted to sign stuff, they'd send out word that they'll be on some street corner from noon to five and you can bring whatever you want to sign.

But when it's a book store, it's all about what's best for them. That's why they get involved. And frankly, many stores are struggling these days. So just like a band will now offer a VIP option to generate more money, a book store schedules book signings to make more money and generally set the rules for how it will work.

As an author, you still want to be friends with the stores, so you work with them and probably do some things you wouldn't normally do if it was just a casual interaction with fans.

I know it's a nice thought that artists should do things for us for the love of art, but it's a business. And with typical book signings, there are business rules that authors are asked to play by.
