It's not about Mike being put off playing in front of 60 people. No disrespect to Mike but he gets paid by the Diamond if there is 6, 60 or 160 people. If he is like most of the artists that play clubs the size of the Diamond, Railway or Yardbirds, they turn up and play to whoever has paid, if there is not enough people in to cover the cost of the artist, then the club loses out, not the artist and in my experience I have yet to come across an artist that actually asks how many tickets have been sold in advance.

There are very few artists we (Yardbirds) actually deal with directly, we work through booking agents on behalf of the bands, we are told the fee and then decide if we think we can afford to take a chance on the booking. We probably say no to as many as we book. It's a very disappointing situation that somebody within the Eclipse camp decided to play just the one gig and it doesn't inspire people to pre book tickets just in case the gig is cancelled.

So we have this circle of events every time we book an artist of the calibre of Eclipse or say House Of Lords, we actually said no to that booking with Robin Beck because we thought it too risky to attract enough paying punters to cover the fee. Despite the fact I'm a fan I cannot ask the club to fund a shortage of the fee if we don't get enough folks to attend, I believe some of the House Of Lords gigs have since been cancelled or changed and again, if they decide to tour next year it becomes a bigger risk especially as fans are cautious to buy a ticket in case of cancellation.

I'm not having a go at bands, just merely putting across the view I see from the other side of the fence.

Scott.
