I seem to recall something said about the band finding it hard to get used to Jim Steinman's approach to arranging and recording after working with "Mutt" Lange and his well-known utter perfectionism attitude towards ...well, everything.

Supposedly, the band would barely have tuned their instruments and done a run through of a song, while Steinman then on his part would declare that they had a take ... to the total bafflement of the DL guys...

For whatever it's worth, though: Steinman worked really well with Billy Squier on the latter's "Signs of Life" album. I'm sure Billy said something about Steinman's input being mainly on the arrangment front, but that he was a very constructive and creative to work with as such --- or something along those lines.

"Signs of Life", while not really similiar to Def Leppard musically, does have big and sometimes unorthodox arrangements that lift the songs. Seen from such a perspective, it doesn't really seem that unlikely that the Steinman/Def Leppard collaboration could have produced something musically worthwhile, had the chemistry worked.
