Fair enough - they did OK over here, playing the sort of 'second tier' venues - 3k capacities and largely maintained that through the grunge years, but they couldn't follow Leppard etc into the arenas. I recall they pushed a single to radio stations under a blank label (On A Broken Dream) and was positive but was turned down when they found out who the band.

I remember them saying that they wanted to give America a go, but nothing happened despite Axl Rose saying they were the best British band since Zeppelin and getting them a record deal.
