There's obviously a purity in the 70s and 80s stuff as it was more pioneering than what we have today. For my money the older bands are better, but I still love Brother Firetribe, H.E.A.T, Work Of Art etc.

The thing is that the bands from the glory days took a wide range of influences from jazz, rock, pop, soul etc and brought them together to create AOR. Which was due to the fact that you could hear all those genres side by side on the radio, and most of the musicians of that era grew up worshiping at the altar of the wireless and ingesting everything they heard.

Nowadays, you get the feeling that 95% of the music AOR bands listen to is AOR, so they create something that sounds very similar but doesn't possess the same depth of creativity, integrity and musical knowledge as the bands of old. If you can accept that and enjoy the sound regardless - which I can a lot of the time providing they have decent songs and enough of their own character - then it's not a problem.

But yes, there are too many average acts who merely perform exceptionally well executed karaoke.

Stanley Kubrick was hired to fake the moon landing, but due to his perfectionism he made them film it on location. On the moon.
