I don't find Steve Howe boring at all. The way he changes guitars and kinds orchestrates different sounds into the music really helps him, I think. But what I missed in Asia's music were all the runs and solos that he would stick into the verses. Back in the 80s, Geoff Downes' playing took up so much of the sonic palette that Howe would just go off with aggressive lead lines in the context of the music (not just during solos). That roughed up their sound a little and made them unique. When he laid back a little, it was less compelling, but I don't think it was boring. Pat Thrall's playing was boring. That was by-the-number melodic rock journeyman stuff.
