I agree. Is rock going away? Not really. After all, people still play Gershwin's music, old musicals, big band jazz, etc. But rock as the dominant music force on the global scene? That's dying. Rock music ascended behind several unique developments:

1) The newness and technical progression of the electric guitar

2) Development of multi-track recording, allowing smaller groups to make bigger-sounding records

3) Advent of FM radio giving more outlets for music (but with DJ control)

4) Improvements in distribution and sales availability of vinyl records (and later cassettes and cds)

5) Size and cultural dominance of the post-WW II generation

As the newness of ALL of these things recede, music isn't going to go away. But all else is changing: production techniques, instruments used, integration of computers and sound modeling, digital distribution and the elimination of "gatekeepers" (DJs and the like). There will be another musical revolution with the impact of rock to come along, but I don't think it will be very soon, and I don't think it's really even started yet.
