I did the same kind of thing. Bought it and on first listen it was so different than what I was expecting, I didn't care for it. After a while I gave it a second shot with a more objective mindset and it was in my CD rotation for a long time.

I was going through a rough patch at the time and could relate to the dark mood/tone of the disc. Still enjoy it a lot.
