......and especially Terry :)

I can recommend that , if you haven't already , you check out the very growl-less newish album by Stratovarius : Nemesis. I've been a fan of theirs in the past but it was always just the 2-3 tracks per album that weren't "angry beehive music" ** - double kick drums as far as the eye can see. I'm not sure when power metal became all about one paced , full speed ahead drums - one of my all time faves Savatage were always classed as power metal and sound nothing like that ........

Anyway - I'm the same with many of these bands whether it be Helloween, Saint Daemon, Thunderstone etc.. I generally only like them when they slow down and display some real power. It's been 15 years or more since the best material from Stratovarius IMHO but the second half of their last album Elysium was seriously good and so I was looking forward to this one and hadn't bothered to check it out until yesterday.

It would have to be one of the very few "power metal" albums that I can happily play from start to finish without being drawn to the Skip button. I have done this 3 times in a row without getting seriously bored, which to me says this will be a stayer.

It's a hard album to describe - it certainly has an atmosphere about it all its own. The double kick drums are only used in context/as a change up and never bothered me .....in fact I liked it . The keys are used a bit different to usual and at times there are almost dance/industrial beats going on for short periods - but it works!

Special mention to the new(ish) guitarist. On a purely technical basis I think he's clearly superior to Tolkki and is also a very busy/rhythmic lead player in the vein of Vito Bratta/Jeff Waters (guitarists will know what I mean if that makes no sense lol) The material is nothing ground breaking but there's plenty of thought and interesting tangents involved in the music unlike so many recent releases.

As with many Scandinavian/Euro bands where English isn't the native language , some of the lyrics are a bit lame but if you can forgive them that then I can highly recommend this for fans of bands like Edguy and slower/more melodic power metal.

Aside from Trail of Murder this is my favourite metal release in quite a while.
