Basically, it can't, they've missed the boat/the horse has bolted !

They should have seen iTunes/Spotify etc. as an opportunity and based their structures on that but they were too busy with their old business model of 'shifting units' and blaming illegal downloads on falling sales to see the way things were heading.

The record industry was only ever in it for itself, the period where artists made a LOT of money was relatively narrow (early 70's to mid 80's/early 90's) and even then you heard horror stories about artists being royally ripped off (eg. royalty rates for CD's compared to cassettes/LP's, when CD's were selling for twice the price and in greater numbers than other formats).

If they disappeared completely, I wouldn't mourn the loss. Most of the new music I get this days is direct from the artists or their distributors and learned about via word of mouth/this site/Facebook etc.

Bands other than the majority of this genre seem to be able to make fantastic sounding product for probably 5% of what it cost to make an album in the 80's.

Hope that explained it a little better, though I've no doubt not everyone will agree with me !!

As for Tom Keifer, with the best will in the world, Spotify wasn't going to hurt his bottom line too much, unless he's severely deluded !
