But the acts you mention were all pretty well established with a strong fanbase to begin with. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it's got to be tough for a band starting out these days to make a decent living.

And as for the record companies, I've read countless times people saying how they should have "moved with the times" but these people never have a viable solution to the problem these companies face. Whilst I disagree that "every download is a lost sale" or "illegal downloading is killing music" it surely can't help can it.

I personally still like to own the product but over the past few years I've found myself buying less & less for a few reasons.

1. Money
2. Illegal downloading isn't killing music, shit music is killing music. For me, there's a lot more quantity than quality.
3. Certain record companies actually dissuade me from buying albums. What is the point of buying something when there's a good chance there's some deluxe edition, bonus track edition, dvd edition etc on the horizon. Just release the fucking album and I'll buy it, but try and sell it to me again a couple of months down the line and I'll just stop buying altogether. At least Van Halen did it right when they released both editions on the same day. Shinedown, Chickenfoot, Rick Springfield etc. take note.
