A few comments on your post, Allied Forces:

If the "Cuts Like a Knife" SHM-CD you bought was among the recent batch of Japanese "mini-LP" re-issues, it was in fact also remastered. That would mean that you're comparing two different masterings of the same album.

I should add that I bought the new Japanese editions of the first five Bryan Adams albums when they came out last year and they do sound excellent, but I would assume that's the remastering job kicking into effect more so than anything else!

One of the first SHM-CD editions I bought was Boston's "Third Stage", which, it turns out, simply uses the original Geffen 1980's CD master - I recall that as a bit of a disappointment, as I thought I was upgrading my old, original CD edition of the album! ...If there's a difference between that and the SHM-CD edition, it's not very apparent to these ears, at least.

Another example that comes to mind are the two batches of Japanese editions of the first three TNT albums in recent years: They're all SHM-CDs, but they haven't been remastered. I've purchased "Intuition" as I never had that on CD in the first place, as well as the first album since the 2012 edition actually reproduces the original and more risqué sleeve.

As I already have the regular Norwegian CD version of "Knights of the New Thunder" I guess that'll give me a chance to compare it with the SHM-CD take, but I have to say that I don't expect to hear much in way of an improvement...

As you point out, Allied Forces, SHM-CD (and, I expect, Blu Spec) is perhaps primarily a format for those with real high end home systems - I've come to realize that my own set-up admittably stops a little shy of genuine high end as such.

PS: While it weers off the original topic here, I'd be curious to know if anyone here has any experience with Steve Hoffman's remasterings of recent years? He has a long track list as a mastering engineer and has his own "gold CD" line, which has tackled "Cuts Like a Knife" and Dio's "Holy Diver", to mention but two titles relevant to the music generally debated on this forum.
