Japanese fans are very loyal. If they like a band then they support them forever. They tend to like melodic music in general.

US audiences tend to be more trend driven and masses of fans completely disown music they like when a new trend comes around. People love to accept revisionist history. So many of the grunge guys that destroyed melodic rock in the US were fans of melodic rock bands and were in fact in a lot of bands that were melodic rock. One of the reasons I dislike the movie Rock Star was the ending where the character wanted to be his own artist and in the minds of the screenwriter that meant he had to go grunge as to say that hard rock/melodic rock was not good. People talk about the building of Nirvana and it didn't exist. Very few people knew them or bought any records before Nevermind. They had many dates canceled before Nevermind and had a show where they sold 3 tickets.

Charts have nothing to do with this. They only report what people are buying and what radio stations are playing. Radio stations want to make money and will play whatever format makes them the most. In the 70s, 80s, and 90s melodic rock bands had plenty of success in America. They were all over the charts and every market had at least one AOR station.

To say Night Ranger wasn't big in America is flat out untrue. They headlined stadiums on their own for 7 Wishes. First three records went Platinum and Big Life is gold. They had a food run and then the band fell apart.

Mr. Big had a #1 and two top 10 singles in the US, but Japan went crazy for them.

Sometimes it is just timing with who makes it. Styx's Show Me the Way would have not been a hit if the US wasn't at war with Iraq.

I love so many artists and think they all should have been huge, but no matter how good the music is, not everybody is going to be huge.
