Key Band Members...

I wanted to post here below in the "Friends or Business partners" thread but for some reasons couldn't.

I was actually somewhat pissed off by some comments hinting that if you are a keyboards player, bassist or drummer you actually were not really a key member of a band. I find this comment ridiculous, albeit it probably would depend on how you listen to music or whether you have a particular interest in a band.

When it comes to defining the sound of a band, there are many musicians out there who were / are an integral part of the process. Change one, even one of the "lesser" ones, and you will have a completely different dynamic. Some examples:

Steve Smith with Journey
Neil Murray with Whitesnake
Billy Sheehan and Pat Torpey with Mr. Big
Troy Lucketta with Tesla
Cliff Williams and Phil Rudd with AC/DC
Tico Torres with Bon Jovi
Jackson Spires with Blackfoot (in addition to his songwriting skills)

To me, a band is NEVER defined by the voice or the lead guitar. There are so many different layers to music than just these two elements.

There was a really good interview of Mike Baird - who was a top session LA musician in the 80's and 90's, and played amongst others with Rick Springfield, Eddie Money, Rita Coolidge, George Benson, Donna Summer -at the time he joined Journey, in which he underlined how important, and irreplaceable, Steve Smith was to the identity of the band.

A band has a certain style and sound which is defined by the sum of all parts. Take Eric Clapton's or Sting's or Phil Collins' who all released several versions of their hits with different line-ups: Clapton sounds very different with Jamie Oldaker, Steve Gadd or Steve Ferrone on drums. Completely different animal because these players have a lot of personality and style, and they bring that into any situation without taking over. Same with Sting (Abe Laboriel Jr. vs. Vinnie Colaiuta vs Omar Hakim vs Manu Katche) or Phil Collins (Nathan East vs Lee Sklar vs Alphonso Johnson).

Great musicians, who have their own style and personality, ARE key members. The songs are obviously very important, but the musicians are the key to the sound.

I would go even as far as saying that studio musicians are key members of any solo artist career. No wonder some guys are still calling the same studio guys over and over again: they defined their sound! If you listen closely you will hear huge differences between the styles of say Abraham Laboriel Sr. or Neil Stubenhaus, or Tim Pierce and Michael Landau, or John JR Robinson and Jeff Porcaro, or Greg Phillinganes and David Paich. They make the sound. They bring soul to songs.
