Why do Metallica's albums sound so poorly produced?

For a band in the music business since the early 80's, I find it unbelievable that sonically they sound so poor.....Death Magnetic sounds lik a shitty demo.....I'm assuming that Hetfield and co are clueless in the studio so need guidance (ie Bob Rock)...so what about Andy Sneap? Compare them to Trivium - ok some of their albums are better than others but their albums always sound great - big, thick fat guitar sound and great sound drums - so if they can do it why not Metallica? For me Trivium are the band that Metallica should be now......
