I'd go with Passion and Warfare, along with Flexable.

Flexable was done a long time ago and has what is, in my opinion, his best work, "Call it Sleep." Not too many people knew who Steve Vai was at the time other than guitar fanatics and probably Frank Zappa fans. It's a strange album, but really seems to reflect his personality.

When Passion and Warfare came out, many guitar mags raved about it. It was seen by some as quite a monumental effort. I agree with some of the reviews that said it would take a few listens to really get your head around what he was doing. The album takes on more meaning when you read interviews about what he was trying to get across with each song.
