Are we too picky or educated to enjoy some music now?

This was inspired by the Mr. Big thread below where some mentioned not liking the "What if" album because of the mix and production. I totally see that and while I love it and rate it as their best I see why people don't care for it overall.

I see that a lot now with albums, "it's too muddy", "loudness wars", "poor mix", "vocals need to be produced better"....etc...etc.

Have we gotten too picky or spoiled even to even enjoy an album with less than stellar production.

I go back to albums I enjoyed in the 80's, like Poison, Ratt, Quiet Riot, VH 5150, actually it's hard to find a lot of perfectly produced albums, for some reason I still enjoy them all, but I could easily tear apart nearly every one of my favorite bands albums one way or another. Take Van Halen 5150 for instance (is there any bass on that record at all), but still one of my all time favorites.

I see a lot of people have a hard time with production now a days. Just wondering what everyone elses thoughts are. I know poor production can ruin some albums but I think overall, we're all too overcritical of production and mixing now and don't really give ourselves time to really listen to the songs. I'm guilty of it also at times.

Mr. Big is one of those where the songs just grabbed me. Sheehan and Gilbert were playing with a renewed passion and intensity. The whole band was and songwise I really think this was their strongest album. The mix is terrible but I was able to overcome it and enjoy the strength of the songs and performances.
