Rick Springfield concert review- Harrahs Philadelphia 3/23

I have seen Rick Springfield before, but not in the last 10 years. I was eagerly awaiting this show since it was first announced… but in the end a combination of things made the show a disappointment for me and my wife.

This concert took place at a casino in Philadelphia (harrahs) and they do not normally host events so I was curious as to what type of venue they have. The actual “event center” as it was billed on the ticket was nothing more than a large meeting room with chairs added. The stage was ridiculously small and only 4 foot high off the ground so you could barely see the stage over the audience.

As the room began the fill up I felt like something was off. The venue was not great for a show setting and the audience looked restless and ready to pounce on Rick. Well, I was not far off. When the lights went out and Rick came on the entire audience rushed the small stage and security had no idea what to do. Everyone just wanted as many pictures and video as Rick as possible, ignoring the music altogether. I could not see Rick or the stage at all through all of the phones being held up in the air for pictures and video. Security had no idea what to do and tried to make the audience clear the aisles which was like trying to herd cats.

In trying to clear the aisles, security actually were taking cameras and running up the stage to take pictures for each concert goer. It was quite distracting to see 4 different security guards running up and down the main aisle (I had aisle seats) taking photos of Rick. Rick noticed too and commented several times during the show. Eventually security gave up and let the audience just flood the aisles.

The concert itself was a mixed bag as well. I absolutely love Rick as a performer. I own everything he has released and play his music quite often. My problem with the show was with his vocals and choruses. Every one of the songs chorus were played through the sound system via studio CD and they didn’t quite fit with the live band. Once you hear perfect vocals on the chorus and then hear Rick come back in on the verse live it’s quite distracting and doesn’t sound well. When he played “You and Me” acoustic it was much more evident because the chorus came in way louder than how Rick was singing the verse and it was so distracting to my ears. It’s also hard to watch everyone in the band sing backing vocals that are faked and on several songs they didn’t even try that hard to look like they were singing at all.

The concert goers didn’t seem to mind because they were just there to take pictures and video of Rick and in this regard Rick did not disappoint. He was as usual, a very good stage performer. Doing his usual moves (using roses to play the guitar, being kids on stage during “Don’t talk”) made the crowd go crazy. He came out into the crowd during “Human Touch” and pretty much went around the entire room high fiving everyone. It was a pretty cool moment and the crowd went bonkers for a chance to touch Rick.

The setlist was a good mix of new songs and the usual hits. He did 5 songs from the new CD and I like when a performer plays new material at a show.. especially when the songs are as good as these.

Maybe the show would have been better for me if the venue was different and if the crowd didn’t act batshit crazy when Rick took the stage.. or maybe I’m not the demographic that should be seeing Rick live.. either way the night was a disappointment for me and my wife.
