The money is not insignificant. It is a great deal of money or the artist wouldn't do it. You would be surprised how many songs you have heard in commercials and movies that have been rerecorded.

Just for the initial use Dennis DeYoung was paid $150,000 for the rerecorded Mr. Roboto for a VW commercial. That was for a set amount of time. If they ran the commercial longer he would have been paid more. The band and the label got nothing. VW saved because A & M would have charged more. Dennis himself said that if VW used the original he might have seen $1,000 if that.

As stated above Steven Pearcy rerecorded for "The Wrestler" . A female artist had a snippet of her song used in a Yoplait commercial and it paid $35,000 and she used that to make her first full record.
