I never said Collen was a drunken problem. The whole band was known for their drinking in the early days. The reason Willis was sacked was because he was an asshole when he was drunk, as opposed to Clark who was a "friendly drunk." I'm sure most of us know the types.

Clark and Collen were drinking buddies and I believe their drunken antics is what lead to their nickname of "The Terror Twins." Phil mentioned a few instances that made him realize he had to sober up - one was when he woke up with a very expensive watch on his wrist and he had no memory of how he got it. Apparently him and Steve had also borrowed Joe's car while they were drunk and left it parked in the yard or something. When Joe confronted Phil, Phil told him to "Fuck off." Remember, this is after Joe handed Phil the gig of a lifetime. The next morning Joe said to Phil, "You know, you told me to fuck off last night." Those were some of the things that made Phil realize he had to quit drinking so that's what he did.

When Mutt came on board for the Hysteria recordings, Phil wasn't drinking, which made it much easier on Mutt. I believe that's one of the reasons Mutt used Phil for most of Hysteria. Clark's drinking affected his playing so while he did play on Hysteria, he played very little. He admitted this in several interviews and Collen also admitted that he (Phil) played most of the guitar on Hysteria.

Early Def Leppard was always about a twin guitar attack. I think High-n-Dry was their best. That's the style of music I like and that's what drew me to the band. You had two guys (Clark and Willis) who complemented each other well. Clark with his great riffs and Willis who I believed added the heaviness to the band.

Def Leppard has lost this. I think the band (or any band) is much stronger when you have 2 talented guitarists writing songs and contributing to the musical style instead of one strong guitarist and one who sits in the background.

Of course, if all you are going to do these day is play your old stuff, then I guess there is no reason to change things but if Def Leppard wants to move forward with new hits, they need to do something about the guitar situation. Find someone who will come in and kick their ass, because that's what they need!
