When Pete Willis was fired and was replaced by Phil Collen, Joe Elliott said in several interviews that "Phil absolutely challenged Steve Clark." He said that (aside from his drinking problem) Pete was getting too complacent and "was content to sit back and play rhythm."

In my opinion, the band ended with Steve clark's death. They are nothing more than a nostalgic act at this point.

I believe the main issue is that Leppard has become the Phil Collen/Joe Elliott show. Phil wants to be the main guitarist, he doesn't want a guitarist who is an equal. While he might be a great technical player, he couldn't touch Steve when it came to writing memorable riffs. If you've heard one Phil Collen solo, you've heard them all..."widdly, widdly, widdly, woooooo!"

Another issue is Vivian Campbell. While he may be able to do a decent job at playing other people's guitar parts, his musical input sucks. The few songs that he was "allowed" to contribute, were awful. Maybe this is one reason why he's a minor guitarist in the band. I think it's a combination of Campbell's poor songwriting ability and Collen's ego that has doomed this band to playing nothing but the Hysteria tour over and over each year.

They need new blood, someone to musically "challenge" Phil Collen instead of playing second banana to him. Could it happen? Very doubtful at this stage of their careers. As long as they can make money off of Steve Clark's legacy, why change?

Yes, I know that Clark played very little on Hysteria but he still had song input. Mutt used Collen on the album because Collen was sober at that point and Mutt didn't want to tolerate another drunken guitarist during the recording sessions (which probably added to Clark's depression.)

Campbell has complained repeatedly in interviews about his role in Def Leppard and how his guitar playing skills have diminished since joining the band. Still, it's probably the best paying gig for him so he tolerates it.
