I think that the difference is that BJ have a huge fan base that is not necessarily a rock fan base. Someone who buys a Rhianna album might buy a Bon Jovi album, but do you think they would be seen dead picking up a Def Leppard album!?
Def Lep, Poison, Motley, etc will not sell records outside of the diminishing rock fan base. All those fans are getting older now and do not really buy much in the way of new music. Unfortunately, not everyone remains as passionate about music as the people here. When they go to see them live they just want to hear the hits from back in the day and relive their youth a little. New song = toilet/bar break, unfortunately. I can see their point in not wanting to make new music, as sad as it is...even if they made the best record of their career it would struggle to sell...
If Bon Jovi were in the same boat as these bands I'm not sure that they would bother making records either, but they know that they are going to get a decent amount of exposure and sales. They are also the only band that still have a major label behind them, pushing them for new albums...
