I really like Kip's solo albums, surprisingly. I am a fan of each band member as an individual. However, Winger has a band leaves me totally cold. I bought the first album when it came out, and never got into it. I did not bother after that and the few things I've heard did not do it for me. That's what surprised me the most when I heard Kip's solo stuff: it was moody, darka and deep. His voice had matured too. Good stuff. So I went back to try to like Winger the band... and again, it did not happen! :-(
A great example that top notch musicianship does not always equal great songs. In terms of pure musicianship, I cannot think of a single band from the 80's that came anywhere close to Winger. The four of them were/are fantastic.
