I think Laurent has a point about originality within the genre, for those who were around in the 80's early 90's may find what's come since in the last 15+ years as poor in comparison to the songs of their youth..
for those like myself who missed the melodic rock party we are less critical as we don't have the same comparisons and we are hearing a song for what it is and not thinking ohh this is a Foreigner re-hash and a poor one at that - we are thinkng wow cool! the music is fresh to us...
It is all down to taste, but and i do agree their is VERY poor songwriters about at the moment, but wasn't this the case back in the day too? hence the heavy use of Russ Ballard, Daine Warren, Jim Vallance, Desomd Child et al, who appeared on all the 80's biggies!
There is some fantastic writers out there if you look for them!
Tommy is right about hype though as this promotes disapointment - but how do you talk about an album that excites you without it translating as hype? if we downplay our thoughts for fear of Hype, how do we encourage those arround us to listen to something - I've never checked anything out after a freind has said 'It's ok i suppose, it's like a second rate Toto, but don't expect anything as good as them though'.
I think bands should start looking at shorter albums, 10 max. but it's the whole value for money thing, but for me if your gonna tag on 3 fillers just so a fan can go 13 songs wow! then it's the wrong reason as already has been said less can sometimes be more!
