It's all down to your personal view, I guess. I'm of the opinion that songwriting, in general, has dropped in standard. Over the whole spectrum, not just AOR.
But, again just personally, the standard in AOR has almost dropped off a cliff. On the older albums you'd get one, possibly two fillers per album. On albums these days, some 15 or 16 tracks long, you'll get 4 or 5 good (not great) songs and the rest are ok to poor. Less was always more back 'in the day'.
Albums were 10, 12 tracks absolute maximum...and they were the better for it. I haven't heard a latter day album that is even close to being in the same league as Escape/4/Hi InFidelity/ Vital Signs. Not even close.
