One of the deciding factors (for me at least) is "who" the band is. A band like Spock's Beard (who I am a BIG fan), I know that I have to listen to the body of work as a whole. 30-45 seconds is not enough. As for straight up melodic hard rock, 30-45 seconds is ample time to grab my attention or not.

I am also BIG on subject matter & lyrics. Aryeon has some of the most thoughtful and intelligent lyrics out there and that usually has me hooked (kind of like a good book ... whats going to happen next!?!)
