UFO - Profession Of Violence
Amazing song, very dramatic lyrics with a simple haunting melody and a stunning outro solo from Paul Chapman.
Queensryche - NM156
This song, when you consider the year of release, is way ahead of it's time. I love everything about it, the way it sounds slightly off beat with the lyrics and backing track. Amazing, future armageddon, lyrics. The dual guitar soloing is fantastic, too.....the only thing missing is the high tech clarity that a proper production would have added to the song.
Thin Lizzy - Waiting For An Alibi
Cannot get enough of Lizzy....couple the song with Gary Moore's solo and it's a belter all round.
Whitesnake - Fool For Your Lovin'
The ORIGINAL version. Tons of great songs to choose from, but FFYL is their best for me.
Journey - Lights
Easly, for me, their best song. I love the simplicity, the melody, the vocal from Perry...and the fact that Schon actually plays a solo without his usual tendency to throw in some 'fret blur'.
Winger - The Lucky One/Tears On Stone
Fantastic song, lyric....everything. Very personal to me. Kip Winger is an exemplary songwriter.
Scorpions - Is There Anybody There
I like the fact that it's a departure from their usual sound. There's a reggae-ish rythmn to it that is perfect and the solo is sublime.
Rush - Red Barchetta
Another almost prefect song for me. Again, the almost cinematic lyrics and big sound on the song push all the right buttons. I love the mid section breakdown of the song, especially. Alex's guitar stabs.....awesome.
Mr Mister - Kyrie
The absolutely perfect pop/rock song. There's nothing I would change, everything is outstanding. Richard Page never sounded better than on Kyrie.
TOOL - Schism
As far as social [and personal] commentary goes it doesn't get much better than TOOL. Lyrically they're as cutting as it gets and the brilliant musicianship just adds to it all. It was close between this, Stinkfist and 46 & 2, but Schism just shades it because of the lyrics. Tool are the pinnacle of 'alt metal' [whatever that is].
The Stranglers - Nice And Sleazy
Brilliance. One of the best bass lines ever recorded.
Kate Bush - The Man With The Child In His Eyes
She wrote this song at the age of 13!!!!! Stunning in every respect and, for me, she never bettered it.
The Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me
Amazing, very dark and expertly written.
