Yeah I hate it too. Always thought Queen was a great example of how to do it right. Of course they could not replicate their intricate vocal orchestrations live, so they didn't even try to, and the songs became even stronger because of this.

(They did use a keyboardist from 1982 onwards, Mandel and then Edney, but both visible)
