He does tend to be - for me at least - a bit hit and miss. Some of his work is superb - earlier material is I think a bit more consistent - and I don't think he's bettered The Stand. But other books I've really enjoyed include Cell, Misery, Dead Zone, Firestarter, Carrie and the Dark Half. Writing as Richard Bachman, The Running Man is great and as far from the testosterone-filled movie with Arnie Schwartzenegger as you could get. In fact I recall enjoying all the Bachman Books short stories apart from Thinner which was a tad obvious.
Turkeys include Needful Things (one of the very few books I've never finished), Pet Semetary and Duma Key, which had me hooked until the last 50 or so pages then just got really silly and predictable. I love his writing style generally so it annoys me when the end turns to custard!
