I vaguely recall Kip Winger saying something about taking an ice pick to his face because most people focused on his looks rather than the music...
And it did...I liked Richard Marx, but could not get into Winger at first because of the image. Not until "Heading For A Heartbreak" came out, at least. Not Rush either--I'd associated them with the boys in my class and just wasn't a fan of their music until my husband got me to listening to them. I got over the 'it's for boys' phobia.
