That's not what happened with the Whitesnake remasters. On those, the volume is jacked up, and the compression used did reduce dynamics in the sound. They weren't trying to take it back a few years but rather make it sound more modern. Problem is, modern mastering is crap! Honestly, very very few remasters surpass the sound of earlier editions.
