I'll go for my favourite singer songwriter - Tom Mcrae. His debut was nominated for the Mercury Music prize in 2000 and the follow up - Just Like Blood - is a masterpiece. It's baffling that he never found more commercial success a he was around at exactly the right time when other similar artists like Damien Rice and David Gray were regularly in the charts. He's a master wordsmith and writes intelligent, heartfelt songs that are sung with the beautiful voice of a vengeful choirboy! I find it quite cathertic, although it may be too bleak for some. As he himself says with tongue in cheek, it's music to listen to after the death of a close relative! This first song is my favourite of his, but it's best to listen without watching the video. Don't know what that combination's all about!!
