Yes and no... While always have made my own mind up, I do on the other hand LOVE reading reviews.
Aside from some hype and warm up often it can be about discovering or rediscovering, but occassionaly reviews work no different to many posts on the boards here; The enthusiasm for a record can sometimes sway one to actually give an album another crack for the better.
Point in case recently A Different Kind Of Truth as initially I had laughed away that first single and (what I know now to be a preconceived lazy) first listen, but the continued enthusiasm and couple in depth discussions here, and some super positive and informative reviews (MR to name an obvious one ;) saw me re-exploring the album wondering if I had missed something. And sure enough once I listened without prejudice I discovered a great record!
And add to that Tattoo now hits the sweet spot, Who woulda thought!? LOL
I think whatever works for individuals is fine. Like I said, much like the review this thread deals with there'd be plenty feeding of that reviewers enthusiasm hopefully purchasing the W.E.T. album and being satisfied also. Nothing wrong with that. Hey sometimes I like to just purchase an album without hearing reading or knowing anything other than it hitting the shelves (or arriving in the post, same deal these days ;)
Dribbling my 2c is all while I watch this terrible first ODI by the West Indies, all out for 70! - I enjoy a solid Aussie performance as much as anyone but WTF!?
