A great part of my life (due to my vocation as an Armored truck employee) has been to spot potentially dangerous situations and plan ahead of time to respond in a way that would keep me alive, hence, I always am postioning myself in a spot most advantageous to assess a situation, looking for alternative avenues of escape, and spotting trouble to avoid it if I can or have a plan if it is unavoidable. Not just on the job, but everywhere. It's not paranoia, it's just a habit that has become second nature. I used to live in Mass and went to the the Station about a year prior to that fire to see Honeymoon Suite (great show btw). Both my wife and I commented on the lack of exits should something happen at that time. I told her go to the back through the kitchen because everyone else will run for the front door or pick up a chair and smash a window and deal with reprecussions later. At the end of the day, the object is always to go home alive, on the job or not.
