Perfect example of an old band getting airplay and the song becoming a hit for them with new and old fans.....Lynyrd Skynyrd Red White & Blue. Sure it came out at the right time here in the states but it got played and played. Younger people didn't care if it were 50+ year old men. So as Wardy said you can't prove one way or the other but we tried NOT playing new music and that failed. Logic would say test the other way. Plus Eddie Trunk made a career on old bands and playing what he wanted on his DJ time.
