I think most people think in "old ways". Radio does not influence music buyers the way it did. So thinking that having your songs on the radio will help shipping units is a thing of the past.
Regardless of the quality of the music, the vast majority of the people want to hear the hits. Period. Ask 100 guys attending a WS gig whether they went for "Here I Go Again" or "Love Will Set You Free", and I guarantee you that 99 are there for HIGA. Now, you can play LWSYF 20 times a day all around the world, and it will never sell as much as HIGA did. Times have changed. People buy less, and buy differently.
I am a huge WS fan, even got a tattoo! I buy everything. But to be honest, I could not list every songs on the last two albums.... I almost never listen to them! I probably spinned them 10 times each, and that was it. So when a huge fan like me does not manage to get into the new songs, can we expect youngsters to get excited by 50 / 60 years old guys rocking out? Not sure.
P.S. This is a general reply, not directed at Terry in particular.
