It's not bollocks, Terry. None of those genre's you mentioned (excepting country) have ever been big in the mainstream. Country has stayed popular because it evolved, partly, but mostly because it is part of the culture in the US.
All of those genre's also have their niche. Melodic rock still has its own, too. But that's all it is now, a small niche. It HAD its time over a span of 15 odd years (which is a good run) but now it's over. It's an ebb and flow.
Apart from a flash in the pan (or two) it's never going to become popular again in the form it was. It doesn't work that way. You could argue that it has evolved into the Keith Urban type artists of this world.

But if you're expecting a resurgence of the sound that was popular in the mid 80's then you're kidding yourself. Has there been a return of Prog as it sounded in the 70's? Has their been an explosion of late 70's sounding punk taking over the radio? Have the countless Zep soundalikes all become the biggest bands in the world? Has another Supertramp emerged?

Wake. Up. The coffee smells great.
