Beatles, Pistols and Nirvana at least wrote their own stuff and they helped shape and lead their musical genres.

Elvis has influence but I don't feel he shaped or defined any musical genre like others. Because of his "rock star" status, I think he may have influenced more people to try music. But that influence could be said for people like Justin Timberlake even. I just don't hear him in a lot of artists. But that's just me.
