I made my points about stats and how not much will change unless ALL sides work on ALL the questions. What did you expect the NRA to say? The other side has been 100% one way so what choice did they have? Again we need to first get rid of the 95% of illegal guns that kill people then work on ways for those to keep and buy what you want and have a real discussion and a universal law on how you get guns, get yearly training, ect.
On school safety. This is coming from first hand knowledge...at least for NYC. There is no way to cover 100% of schools with either a Police Officer or a Trained Armed Security Officer. Our taxes would skyrocket! Right now in every school any person can walk right in and cause havoc. Fire laws hurt a lot. When I was in High School (right after the middle ages LOL) all doors were locked at the beginning of school. The only way in and out was the front and that had a person there to greet you. With Fire Safety laws doors had to remain unlocked. My solution would be this. And yes it would cost up front but not as ongoing as armed officers. Have a system where you can lock outer entrances but be able to unlock from the inside only. Rather simple I think? Some building do have these doors. Parents would have to have an appointment to enter the school or at least call ahead. So you can't stop a nut from doing what they want to do but now you forced them to enter from one way. If there is any fear or unknown person push the security alarm like banks have. Security can 1) come to the front and aid the person at the front 2) monitor the situation via camera and if the guy pulls a weapon and a general alarm is sounded.
At the point of the alarm you do what the teachers did in Newton, which by the way shows THEY were well trained. Not to much in the media about this. Lock your room door and hide. The procedure then would be as these teachers did. A State Trooper knocked on the door and told the teacher "State Trooper Jones its safe to come out". The teacher responded "TY but if you are a police officer you will be able to get a key...we will wait". Cheers to them!
