They got busted using tapes at some overseas festival, which they were using to presumably hide Augeri's deteriorating condition. Then when they got caught, they denied it and suddenly Augeri sounded horrible live (horrible meaning obviously worn down to the bone vocally). So, then Augeri decides to take time off to heal and JSS is brought in to finish the Def Leppard tour (2006, I think). Somewhere in the midst of this tour, the decision is made to keep JSS and axe Augeri. No actual details were given that I recall, but I think it was a case of "Steve is sick and can't continue".

Now, IMO, they should have finished the tour w/ JSS, thanked him for his assistance, and taken another year off to let Augeri heal up. Then they could have done the shared vocal thing they're doing now w/ Arnel/Deen/Cain. But no...they jump from Augeri to JSS to Arnel in the matter of, what, a year?

I've heard speculation as to WHY they decided to release JSS, but I'm not repeating it. It doesn't really matter now anyway.

But the "WHY" that pertains to not waiting for Augeri to heal before continuing remains a mystery...to me, at least. Aside from not interrupting the income stream, which will never be the official reason.
