At least there's showmanship of some kind - I saw a tedious show by Springsteen disciples The Gaslight Anthem and they looked like mechanics. Whenever he wasn't singing, Brian Fallon was lurking at the back of the stage doing the 'show the other guitarist how you play this bit' pose. Wasn't expecting Poison's firemans pole, but....
Looking at the grunge bands - have you seen the footage of Eddie Vedder swinging from the rafters, 30ft above the audience? Apparently, Chris Cornell used to loosen the stitches of his shirts so he could rip it off, Hulk Hogan style. Again, they hadn't raided the dressing up box or their mums make up bag (Mother Love Bone aside..), but there was still a show.
