Depends who's doing the surround mix...yet to hear a bad one of Steven Wilson's. They do sound awful if they're not done properly though, with little thought going into instrument placement and levels.

As for the download war being lost, the record companies should have thought about that a LONG time ago, instead of burying their heads in the sand or going down the litigation route with their antiquated business model.
