My parents didn't have an effect on me right away. My mother enjoys musicals and pop, a la Celine Dion, Whitney Houston etc. My father likes Deep Purple, Zeppelin, Mountain and most '70s bands, but I think he died a little inside when I went through a decade-long 'rap' phase. Since then, I slowly developed a taste in modern metal, then regressed into older bands (that the old man would appreciate) and in the last five years, have expanded into melodic rock. Perhaps my mother having a taste for powerful singers influenced my future love of some of the MR/AOR greats. It took a good fifteen years, but I think I've finally come around to the 'rents way of thinking...
